Story Arc:
Changing TidesTitle: Hanging Out
Summary: Nate and Helen hangs out for the first time in awhile. During their time together feelings come to light and kisses are shared.
Notes: This is after alot of denying on both their parts. I have more denial of their feelings planned, but I wanted to write another version of their first kiss. In the original story Helen and Nate kiss during her prom. Vergil, Nate's brother, is introduced. Diane is mentioned again along with Jessica and Sabrina more of Helen's friends.
Nate didn’t know why he was so nervous. He invited Helen over to watch movies and play video games. Something they have done so many times he lost count. However, today he was shaking with nerves. He didn’t get it, but it wasn’t going to affect him. It’s been so long since Nate hung out with Helen he wasn’t going to pass up this chance. He would like the images of Helen in her bathing suit to go away, but that was a losing battle.
Nate walked around the house straightening pillows and dusting the table. Emily, one of the maids, giggled softly at the frantic way Nate went around the house. She thought it was so cute the way Nate was acting for Helen who claimed wasn’t his girlfriend. Carl, one of the chefs, thought the same thing when Nate jogged into the kitchen to check the fridge. Once everything was accounted for, such as Helen’s favorite snacks, Nate sighed in relief. He turned around when the doorbell sounded. He rushed to the mirror next to the fridge.
For once Nate was glad his sister was vain enough to put a mirror in the kitchen. He pushed a loose strand of hair back before jogging to the foyer. Arthur, one of the butlers, opened the door smiling happily at Helen.
“Good afternoon Ms. Robinson.” Arthur said.
Helen smiled, “Good afternoon Arthur. How are you?”
Arthur smiled, “I’m fine how are you?”
“I’m doing good.” Helen said starting a conversation with Arthur about the latest movie in the theaters.
Nate looked over at Helen taking in her outfit. Helen wore a fitted black t-shirt with dark blue capris and black wrap around sandals. It was one of Helen’s normal summer outfits, but Nate couldn’t stop staring. Nor could he ignore the fact on how turned on he was. He shook his head, This is Helen. She’s kitty and my sweet little friend.
Who’s probably wicked in bed.
Nate silently groaned at the irritating voice in the back of his mind. Another thing he wished would stop, but knew it wouldn’t. These things had to stop or he would have to visit a therapist.
At least I’ll be a true rich kid then. Nate thought chuckling at his own joke. He pulled his blue t-shirt down before walking over.
“Hi Helen,” Nate said smiling.
Helen looked over smiling brightly at him. “Hi Nate how are you?”
“I’m good kinda tired from all the work I did this semester, but I’m good.” Nate said.
“Work? Are you sure you don’t mean all the partying you did?” Helen joked pushing a strand of hair away from his face.
Nate laughed, “I should be asking you that, graduate.”
Helen smiled, “Well I always finish my work before I party. I know you don’t though.”
Nate shrugged, “I always get my work done in the end though.”
Helen giggled, “Of course, in the most half assed way ever.”
Nate laughed walking over to pick her up. He twirled Helen in the foyer laughing at the shocked scream she let out. Helen laughed as she hit his arms, “Put me down! Put me down!”
Nate shook his head, “Nope not going to besides this is too much fun.”
Helen laughed harder squirming in his hold. “Nate, please, I’m going to be dizzy!”
“Alright, alright I know how you have no balance.” Nate joked placing Helen down. Helen staggered a bit on her sandals. She gripped Nate’s shirt for balance shooting a playful glare at him.
“I have plenty of balance. I would have more if you didn’t pick me up all the time.” Helen said smoothing her t-shirt down. Nate noticed Helen’s messy hair and playful gleam in her eyes. He pushed the images of different dreams down before flashing a playful smile at Helen.
“I love picking you up. You’re so much fun to swing around.” Nate said.
“You just want to show off how strong you are. Typical guy,” Helen joked. She screamed in glee when Nate hugged her from behind.
“Would I be anything else?” Nate said smiling.
Helen laughed, “No I guess not. That would be asking for too much after all.”
“You must be in a good mood if you have jokes.” Nate said.
Helen nodded, “I am. Graduation is in a few days and my parents are out of town for business. My grandparents are coming back home in a couple of days. Life is good.”
Nate beamed, “That’s great I love your grandparents. Do they like Italy?”
“They love it. We’re going to be going there with them in the summer. You should join us my grandma adores you.” Helen said.
“I adore her too. She’s so sweet and loves to tease you. That is so great.” Nate said.
Helen giggled softly, “She teases me about you all the time.”
“Really?” Nate asked.
“Yeah saying we’re going to be married one day and stuff. Isn’t that funny?” Helen said smiling sheepishly.
Nate nodded with a light flush. “Yeah it is. My mom and grandma does the same thing. Don’t get me started on Clara and Vergil.”
“What about me and Clara?” Vergil asked walking in the room.
“Just saying how you two love to tease me.” Nate said.
Vergil smiled, “Of course we love teasing our little brother. It’s just too much fun.”
Nate rolled his eyes as Helen giggled softly. Virgil grinned, “Of course I won’t tease you in front of your girlfriend. Hi Helen long time no see.”
Helen smiled, “Hi Vergil it has been awhile. How are you?”
“I’m good the only thing I can complain about is my department. I don’t know why they can’t function without me.” Vergil said grumbling at a recent text message. He cursed under his breath putting the phone away before looking up at Helen and Nate. “So tell me what’s on the agenda for today?”
“We’re going to hang out, bum around, and watch some movies.” Nate said.
Vergil looked down at Nate’s arms sitting loosely around Helen’s waist. He looked back up with an amused smirk. “I hope that’s all you’ll do.”
Nate frowned at Vergil’s look before turning his eyes down to his arms still around Helen’s waist. He quickly withdrew them with a bashful look. “Um sorry about that,”
“Oh it’s fine I didn’t notice it.” Helen said. She fumbled with her purse trying to calm her nerves down. Nate noticed the change in Helen’s body language, but was too concerned with
Vergil’s smug look to comment. He pushed his hands in his pockets. “So how long are you staying in the office?”
“I don’t know. I know I won’t be leaving until I can get the approval on this cover. I honestly don’t know why they can’t chose one. I’ll be back soon. If I’m not I’m over Cathy’s house. My cell will be on and I’ll keep the volume up this time.” Vergil said.
“You know I know that, but mom doesn’t.” Nate said.
“I don’t want to go through that again. Well I’ll see you two lovebirds later. Don’t make me an uncle too soon.” Vergil joked. He winked at Helen before he ruffled Nate’s hair. Helen giggled to cover up her embarrassment. Nate playfully pushed Vergil’s hand away. “Yeah, yeah make sure to say hi to Cathy for me.”
Vergil nodded, “I will well see you.” He walked over to Helen hugging her tightly before going over to the door.
Nate shook his head, “As you can see Vergil hasn’t changed. Come on everything is set up in the den and we have all your favorites.”
“Great, now that prom is over I can finally eat again.” Helen said walking into the kitchen with Nate. She greeted Carl as she walked over to the fridge. Carl smiled when Nate walked in behind her.
“Ms. Helen I have to say it’s refreshing to see you again. Finally Nate brings someone good home.” Carl said.
Helen smiled shyly, “Thank you it’s good to see you again too.”
“Can someone in this house not tease me? For the last time I’m sorry I bought that girl home. I didn’t know she was vegan alright?” Nate exasperated.
Carl chuckled, “I know I just wanted you to remember. Besides Helen was always my favorite. She appreciates my cooking.”
Helen nodded, “It’s great I can’t wait to try some more of your delicacies.”
Carl smiled, “Sure thing I’ll whip something up for you in a minute. How are your cooking classes going?”
“Great I hope I can get into culinary school soon.” Helen said.
“You will you’re an excellent cook. You can get in.” Nate said.
Helen twirled a lock of hair smiling sheepishly. “Thanks Nate I hope so.”
“With Nate’s encouragement I know you can.” Carl said.
Helen felt her face heat under the attention. She was thankful it didn’t show on her brown skin. She nodded, “Thanks again.”
“Anytime.” Carl said.
“I got my stuff. Did you get your snacks?” Nate asked.
Helen nodded holding up her bag of chips and pop. “Yep.”
“Cool let’s go before he continues.” Nate said.
Helen giggled, “Alright,” She turned to Carl with a wave. “See you Carl.”
Carl waved, “See you sweetie. I’ll begin your favorite meal soon.”
“Thanks.” Helen said.
“Oh and Nate don’t let this one go.” Carl teased laughing at the color in Nate’s cheeks.
Nate frowned grumbling under his breath. “I’ll come back later for more food.”
Helen laughed following Nate out the kitchen. Carl smiled warmly at the couple before turning to gather his pans.
*~*~*
“So, one of those girls rubbed Carl the wrong way.” Helen said on their way to the den.
“Well Carl didn’t mind that she was vegan, he only minded when she started talking about his food. That’s when he became pissed off. Besides she left me after awhile.” Nate said.
“Why?” Helen asked.
“She tried to change me. When I wouldn’t do it she got pissed and left.” Nate said stepping aside to let Helen in the room first. Helen smiled at the gesture as she walked over to the couch. “I don’t blame you. I hate when guys ask me to do that. Like I’m going to stop being happy for you.”
“That’s how I feel. I mean you can’t change anyone no matter how hard you try.” Nate said.
“I tell different girls that, but I’m looked at like I’m crazy.” Helen said.
“I don’t see why it’s a good thought to have.” Nate said placing the food on the table. Helen nodded placing the bag of chips in her lap. “I know, but you know me. I’m always the crazy one.”
“I don’t think you’re crazy.” Nate said.
“You don’t?” Helen asked in surprise.
Nate shook his head leaning down to turn on the t.v. “No I don’t they’re the crazy ones.”
“You’re just saying that. I know I’m crazy it’s fine.” Helen said softly looking at the movies on the rack. Nate shook his head walking over to the couch. He sat down next to her taking the chips out of her lap.
“Hey,” Helen protested. She looked up to fuss at Nate, but stopped at the look in his eyes. She swallowed nervously, “N-Nate?”
“I don’t think you’re crazy. I like listening to your theories and jokes and everything else you come up with. I thought you were going to stop the self hate.” Nate said.
Helen looked down at her hands. “It’s hard, but I’m trying. I just don’t want to disappoint anyone if I relapse.”
“You won’t don’t worry about it. We’ll be here to help you. Besides Diane would kill me if I do anything less than helpful.” Nate said smiling.
Helen giggled softly, “Yeah that’s true not to mention what Jessica and Sabrina will do too.”
Nate shivered lightly, “You guys can be really scary, but since we’re on the topic, no more sad talking. You’re graduating soon which means your family has very little control left. Bask it in as long as you can and try to get everything you can from it.”
“Did you do that?” Helen asked.
Nate smirked, “How do you think I got the new car?”
Helen laughed, “That’s evil.”
“No it’s not I felt it was a just decision.” Nate said smiling when Helen laughed harder. He loved the melodic sound and the bright smile on her face. Nate loved when he put it on there even more. Helen calmed down after awhile wiping her eyes. “I can’t believe you. That was wrong.”
“I didn’t think so. So do we have an agreement?” Nate asked.
Helen nodded, “We have an agreement. Gee, Nate, you make it hard to stay sad around you.”
Nate grinned smugly, “Then my work is done here. So what do you want to watch? We have action, romance, chick flick, anime, old time cartoons, horror, suspense, and anything else my mom was able to jam up there.”
“Um doesn’t matter to me. We can watch whatever.” Helen said.
Nate nodded he stood up walking over to the dvd stand. He turned to the titles looking for something to watch. He missed the way Helen’s eyes quickly trailed over his body before turning back to the table. After searching for five more minutes Nate decided on a comedy. He popped it in the blue-ray player grabbing the remote on his way to the sofa. He pressed play turning to Helen. “I hoped you don’t mind it’s a comedy.”
“I hope you don’t mind it’s a romantic comedy.” Helen said. Nate looked at her quizzically before turning to the screen. He groaned in annoyance, “Damn it Carla, I told her to put the disc back in the case when she’s through with it. Oh well I guess I can watch this.”
Helen giggled, “It shouldn’t be too hard. I’m sure you know how it ends.”
“The main character falls for the one who doesn’t care that much about them, but Hollywood changes that, so now the person cares. Same old, same old.” Nate said sitting back against the seat.
Helen laughed, “Pretty much, but it’s been awhile since we watched a mind numbing movie.”
Nate grinned, “Yeah it has. How I miss movies like this.”
Helen nodded, “Me too I think my mind can’t comprehend anything too complicated. Not after all that studying I did.” She sighed leaning against Nate’s shoulder. Nate’s eyes widened, his cheeks reddening slowly from Helen’s heat. He didn’t understand his reaction. Helen has done this ton of times, why did he react differently? Why did he feel the need to hold her close and kiss her?
Nate pushed those thoughts in the back of his mind while he cleared his throat. He grinned, “What did you do copying the whole book?”
“Just about, but I passed everything so that’s what counts. What about you?” Helen asked looking up at him.
“I finished my tests two weeks ago. I passed my classes and probably rewrote things a million of times, but other than that I did good.” Nate said.
Helen smiled, “I guess you found time to study in between all that partying.”
“You know I did.” Nate joked. Helen laughed turning back to the movie. Nate laid his arms loosely around Helen’s shoulder getting lost in the movie.
*~*~*
Thirty minutes in Helen shifted against Nate grumbling about the recent scene. Nate added commentary to the movie ignoring the nagging in the back of his mind. He didn’t have to listen. It was possible to watch the movie and not have any thoughts about kissing Helen. If Nate could do it during the start of puberty, then he can do it during a movie.
Helen reached over to grab the remote. Nate grabbed the other end pulling it back. “Hey, what’s up?”
“I hate this scene let’s move forward to the next one.” Helen said.
“Aww, but don’t you want to see the lead female get kissed by the wrong guy. That’s always funny.” Nate said.
“It’s also very irritating. Now let me change it.” Helen said pulling the remote forward. Nate pulled it back, “I want to watch it.”
“I don’t let me change it.” Helen said pulling it back again.
Nate gripped the remote harder, “It’s not that long besides you always go too fast and we have to rewind it back.”
“Not true I don’t skip scenes like you do.” Helen said increasing her grip.
“Let’s watch it. It’ll be over soon.”
“Not good enough let me change it.”
They started bickering among each other pulling the remote back and forth. When Helen almost pulled it out of Nate’s grasp Nate started tickling her. Helen fought against it until Nate found the spot on her side. Helen dropped the remote trying to inch away from Nate. Nate chuckled evilly pulling Helen close to his side.
“Oh no you’re not getting away I haven’t tickled you in awhile. I need to make up for lost time.” Nate said.
Helen twisted in Nate’s arms laughing harder. “No, no, stop, stop! I can’t breathe!” She tried to move again pushing at Nate’s arms. Helen eased down to the floor, Nate followed laughing with her. Helen turned in his arms placing her hands on Nate’s shoulders. She tried to push Nate away, but it wasn’t working.
“Say it, say it!” Nate said smiling.
“Never!” Helen exclaimed before breaking out in a fit of giggles.
“If you don’t I’ll keep going.” Nate said.
“Alright, alright, uncle! You win!” Helen screamed squirming underneath him.
Nate stopped with a triumphant smile. “See that’s all it takes.”
Helen glared lightly at Nate through her pants. She pouted, “You’re still a meanie.”
“Am not,” Nate said.
“Are too,” Helen replied pushing a few strands away.
“Am not,”
“Are too,”
They stared at each other irritably before bursting into laughter. Nate’s bangs fell around his face as Helen’s hair flared out on the pillow. Their laughter slowed down when they noticed their position. Nate’s hands were next to Helen’s head while Helen laid underneath him. The voice in the back of Nate’s mind spoke louder this time. He tried to ignore it, but the situation did present a good offer.
Then again how did Helen feel about this?
Before Nate could think any further Helen leaned up, kissing the corner of his mouth softly. She pulled back looking up shyly. Nate stopped thinking as he leaned down kissing Helen lightly. He pulled back looking at the shock in her eyes. The shock turned to relief then to happiness. Nate smiled going back down to kiss Helen again. Helen closed her eyes placing her hands on his shoulders tentatively. Nate placed his shaky hands on Helen’s waist.
They didn’t hear the movie behind them or the door shutting. Outside Vergil smiled as he walked away from the door. He walked into the foyer going over to an expectant Arthur. “Did you find your folder in the den?”
“No, but I have a copy of the documents on my computer. I just wanted to check to be sure.” Vergil said.
“Alright have a good day.” Arthur said.
Vergil leaned up pressing a kiss to his cheek. “You too.” He smiled walking out the door.
Arthur chuckled closing the door behind him. He walked back to the living room when something came to mind. I wonder how Nate and Helen are doing.
In the den Helen broke the kiss Nate looked down in surprise. “What’s up?”
“I thought someone came in.” Helen said.
Nate leaned up staring at the closed door. He looked back down to Helen. “Nope the door is still closed.”
“Good.” Helen said leaning up to kiss Nate again. Nate hummed in agreement turning his head to the side to deepen the kiss. They could always look at the movie later.
