Summary: Carrie and Chase remember dreams from their younger days while sitting in front of his fireplace.
Notes: So…I can’t even picture these two as adults, LOL. They never make it far past sixteen in my head, so I had to do a little thinking for this. They’re roughly mid-thirties here.
“You know, Chase, sitting here with the fire like this makes me want to pack up the family and move to the country.”
“So do it. I have plenty of room.”
“I am tempted. Do you remember when we planned to get a house and live there with Laura and spend all our time drawing and woodworking and making music?”
“I do! And you went and ruined it when Dean came along.”
“Pfft, it’s not all my fault. Laura got married, too. Besides, I don’t think we would have liked it very much in the end.”
“It was nice to think about, though. Heck, when you two retire or when the girls go to college, come on out here. I’d love to have you.”
“I like that idea. We might take you up on it.”
“Please do. So what’s in that painting-sized package over there that’s got my name on it?”
“You’ll find out tomorrow.”
“Oh, you’re mean.”
“And you’re terrible. Don’t you like surprises anymore?”
“Course I do, but that’s not gonna stop me from being curious.”
“You’re such a kid.”
“You know it.”
“Hey, Chase?”
“Yeah?”
“Are you doing all right out here?”
“Course I am, I wouldn’t be here now if I wasn’t.”
“Okay. I worry sometimes about you living by yourself. So does Laura.”
“Oh, I’m fine. I like this place, and it’s not that far away from the city. Besides, you two worry way too much.”
“Do you blame us?”
“No, I blame myself.”
“Don’t blame yourself too hard. We just want you to be okay.”
“I’m doing just fine, really. You can tell her that if you see her before I do.”
“Sure.”
“Speaking of that, though, I was going to ask if you minded me borrowing the girls for a couple of weeks next summer. Kaylee was asking if they could visit and I told her I’d check it with you.”
“Yes, great, take them! I hardly get any work done in the summer with them hanging around needing me to do things for them all the time. I’d pay you to do it, even.”
“Can I hold you to that?”
“Not now that you’ve offered.”
“Rats. Okay, then, just let me know when they get out of school and we’ll plan it.”
“Sounds good. How is that ‘speaking of’ me worrying about you, though?”
“Oh, shut up. It made sense in my head.”
“Lots of things make sense in your head.”
“You keep that up and I’ll toss you in a snow drift.”
“Try it. I dare you.”
“All right, fine.”
“Ack! Mercy!”
“Thought so! …no, you’re not allowed to stick your tongue out at me, that’s my job.”
“I do what I want.”
“You always have.”
“Damn straight.”
“When’s your next volume coming out?”
“Mid-February, but I’m getting advanced copies so you’ll probably get yours end of January.”
“Awesome.”
“Yeah. Oh, I should probably spend a couple of hours working on Monday’s comic for the site. Be nice to have it done and not have to worry about it over the holiday weekend.”
“You do that. I’m going to hit the hay. Do you want the fire?”
“Yeah, if you don’t mind.”
“Sure, just put it out when you go to bed.”
“I will. Night, Chase, and Merry Christmas.”
“You too, Care.”
