Notes: Sort of a companion to this. :P

The tail of Chase’s perky red Santa hat bobbed up and down as he handed out the next round of presents to the family. Laura glanced at the tag on hers and smiled across the circle at her aunt. The box was bigger than her lap and most likely contained clothes, which pleased her. Lydia was one of few people who knew exactly how to shop for her.

Beside her, Aaron eyed the small, flat box wrapped in metallic blue paper that Chase had placed in his hands. He fingered the label that betrayed her as the giver. “This one’s safe, promise,” she whispered.

He chuckled and unwrapped it quickly. The festive gift card box contained an iTunes card worth fifteen dollars. “Oh hey, thanks. I could never have too many of these.”

“You’re welcome,” said Laura, relieved that her gift had gone over well.

Aaron fanned himself with the card half-heartedly. “Just watch, though, I’ll go on the site to redeem it tonight and the computer will turn into a portal and suck me into the vortex-"

“Oh, don’t!” She put a hand over her mouth, fresh guilt washing through her insides.

He gave her a little smile and tucked the card back in its box. “Don’t worry about it, I was teasing.”

She nodded and stared down at the wide red bow on top of her own gift, feeling numb until a snort to her left jarred her out of it. She glanced at Aaron as he stole a peek at her. A grin threatened to form on his face, but he squashed it heroically.

It was too much. Laura slid down in her seat and covered her face with her hands as Aaron burst out laughing. Once started, neither could stop. They finally regained their breath, only to find the entire family staring at them.

“What’s so funny?” Laura’s mother asked, looking close to giggles herself even though she had no idea what the joke was.

“Nothing,” they said in unison. Laura quickly began to unwrap her package.

She could not look Aaron in the eye the rest of the night.
