Notes: Stupid dictionary.com had to cough up “enceinte” on November 1st. This was originally intended for that, but I am picky.
The click of her boots against the wooden floor seemed more like blasting strokes on a taiko drum. Her palms dripped sweat, and she felt like she was walking into a courtroom instead of a party.
If you’re wrong, you’re wrong, she thought, twisting the door handle. You can try again. There’s no hurry.
She had prepared for disappointment, but not for Mariah’s ecstatic grin and fierce embrace. Her heartbeat slowed from a sprint to a walk as she realized what it meant. “Don’t you dare tell me the gender,” she said.
“Fine,” Mariah said cheerfully. “Can I name it?”
