Here, I’ll give you the gist of it: follow the spirit of the law, not the word of the law if you’re the defendant and vice versa if you’re the prosecutor. Yay for three years that taught me that.
Daisy was in the hospital. And still obsessed with her coffee.
April 2010/Juliet/1862
MONDAY, APRIL 12TH
DAISY, 6:22AM: Please, in addition to my laptop, can you get me some of the books on my night table?
DAISY, 6:25AM: And what time are you coming anyway? There’s nothing on TV.
DAISY, 6:37AM: Also, did Jonathan tell you when he was planning to come?
JULIET, 7:01AM: Good morning to you too. Right. Which books do you want me to bring? Then do you want some fiction books too?
DAISY, 7:02AM: You’re awake! Fiction books… the Virginia Woolf one perhaps?
JULIET, 7:05AM: Okay. I’m coming over now.
DAISY, 7:06AM: Visiting hours only start at 10.
JULIET, 7:07AM: Unless that was a rebuff, I’ll manage to come, promise.
DAISY, 7:08AM: Can you bring coffee?
JULIET, 7:09AM: No chance in hell. There may be a reason why they’re not serving you coffee.
DAISY, 7:10AM: Bitch.
JULIET, 7:12AM: Right back atcha, sister. I’m in hospital now anyway.
DAISY, 7:13AM: Yay! No coffee though
JULIET, 7:17AM: No, no coffee. However, they just explained to me you needed sleep and stuff, blab la bla and that I should make sure I’m not disturbing your recovery. However, you’re awake so they’ll let me come until 8:30 when a doctors coming around.
DAISY, 7:17AM: k.
* * *
JULIET, 8:46AM: What did the good man say?
DAISY, 8:48AM: That I’m having a CAT scan today.
JULIET, 8:49AM: Is it that serious?!
DAISY, 8:50AM: They’re worried I may have internal bleeding and because it’s a head wound they have to make sure. They also want nothing to have gone anywhere near my brain and shit.
JULIET, 8:51AM: I’m sorry. I’m allowed to stay until class now though. I’m coming right up.
DAISY, 8:51AM: Good.
GRACE, 9:00AM: Good Morning! How are you? How’s your friend?
JULIET, 9:02AM: Morning Grace. I’m a little tired and worn out. Daisy’s asleep next to me. She keeps on dozing off. She’s having some type of scan and I’m worried about her.
GRACE, 9:06AM: It’s probably just procedure cause it’s a head wound. I doubt it’s anything serious. The hospital is just playing safe. Anyway, do you want company?
JULIET, 9:07AM: You’re the best. But no, I’m going to class in half an hour anyway. What are you doing now, anyway?
GRACE, 9:08AM: I opened the shop at 9, as usual, but it’s been a slow eight minutes…
JULIET, 9:10AM: You’ll have a swarm of people soon, promise. I’m sending all my friends to you for buying Daisy flowers.
GRACE, 9:17AM: Thanks :P Have a good day! xxxG
JULIET, 9:19AM: You too! xoxoxJ
* * *
DAISY, 10:48AM: Are you coming back for lunch?
JULIET, 10:50AM: I’ll be there until you go into your scan. Anyway, I’M IN CLASS.
DAISY, 10:51AM: Is your phone on silent?
JULIET, 10:54AM: Yes.
DAISY, 10:56AM: Then what are you complaining about?
JULIET, 10:59AM: that I’m missing out on some great lesson or another.
DAISY, 11:01AM: Here, I’ll give you the gist of it: follow the spirit of the law, not the word of the law if you’re the defendant and vice versa if you’re the prosecutor. Yay for three years that taught me that.
JULIET, 11:02AM: Thank you so much. Do you mind if I hear a professional opinion on that?
DAISY, 11:03AM: Yes, I mind.
DAISY, 11:07AM: Why aren’t you answering?
DAISY: 11:10AM: JULIET!?
JULIET, 11:11AM: Yes? I was called on in class and had to bluff my way out of that. Teacher was more than a little annoyed. Anyway, try and sleep for a bit Daisy.
DAISY, 11:12AM: Don’t want to.
JULIET, 11:13AM: Then at least stop bothering me!
DAISY, 11:14AM: That was the sound of my heart shattering into a thousand pieces. Good luck trying to piece it together again, bitch.
JULIET, 11:15AM: I love you too. :P
* * *
AMY, 12:41PM: Are either of you John-Jay-ing for lunch?
DAISY, 12:42PM: I’m in St Lukes.
JULIET, 12:43PM: I’m eating lunch with Daisy’s, whose in the hospital.
AMY, 12:44PM: What happened to Daisy?
JULIET, 12:45PM: Ask her. She’s texting. I’m still in class.
AMY, 12:45PM: Sry
* * *
JULIET, 12:46PM: Shall I bring salad for lunch? Hospital breakfast didn’t look to gourmet.
DAISY, 12:48PM: Yes please. From that vegetarian place on the Barnard side of Broadway, right?
JULIET, 12:50PM: Yarp. We can share one salad. They’re huge.
DAISY, 12:52PM: Thanks. No get your ass over here. There are only so many episodes of Fairly Odd Parents I can watch. XD
JULIET, 1:01PM: In lobby. Coming now.
* * *
GRACE, 2:31PM: How’s your friend?
JULIET, 2:38PM: She just went in for her CAT scan. When I’m back at 4:30 she’ll be out and they’ll tell me what on earth is going on.
GRACE, 2:40PM: What’s the university doing about?
JULIET, 2:41PM: Some woman came to visit her to ask her whether she was going to press charges against the school. When Daisy said no, she was happy. Also, they’ve realised something saying ‘a jogger’ was attacked to all the students, warning them to be careful.
GRACE, 2:42PM: Her name’s being kept secure then?
JULIET, 2:43PM: Yes. Which is good. I don’t want the press harming her by making a huge deal out of it.
GRACE, 2:44PM: Understandable. Are the police involved?
JULIET, 2:45PM: Yes. They asked Daisy what she remembered of the attack and have been going through the CCTV cameras around Riverside.
GRACE, 2:46PM: Sounds like Daisy is in safe hands. I wouldn’t worry.
JULIET, 2:47PM: Thanks. It’s just kind of exhausting. Literally everything I do I usually do with Daisy: sleep, eat, work, and attend class… I miss her.
GRACE, 2:48PM: She’ll be back faster than you’ll realise. And until then I’ll be your surrogate Daisy (except going to class…. I doubt Columbia would be too eager for that). :P
JULIET, 2:50PM: I’d like that! Daisy’s dad is picking her up on Friday anyway to bring her down to North Carolina for a week or so before she’ll come back to class, so you’ll have to look after me then!
JULIET ►DAISY, 2:50PM: I MISS YOU SO MUCH! Who’s gonna help me write my texts when you’re in North Carolina? I think I messed up a text to Grace.
JULIET ► JOEY, 2:52PM: I just told Grace she should take care of me when she told me she would be my surrogate Daisy. I came on to strong, didn’t I?
GRACE, 2:53PM: I look forward to it ;)
JULIET ► JOEY, 2:54PM: Don’t worry about it. XD
JOEY, 2:55PM: What did she reply?
JULIET ► JOEY, 2:55PM: Oh, nothing.
JULIET ► GRACE, 2:56PM: XD
JOEY, 2:57: You’re mean.
* * *
JOEY, 3:05PM: Do you have ten minutes?
JULIET, 3:07PM: I’m sitting in my room staring at Daisy’s unmade bed. I think I have an hour.
JOEY, 3:08PM: Would you rather we called or texted?
JULIET, 3:09PM: Texted. I’m running out of calling time on my contract.
JOEY, 3:10PM: K. How are you? Really now. You don’t need to gloss anything over for me.
JULIET, 3:13PM: I’m so worried about Daisy. And I miss her so much. I wish she was here to tell me everything was okay. And I feel so guilty because while she’s in hospital having a CAT scan I’m flirting with Grace. I should be there with her.
JOEY, 3:15PM: Firstly, don’t feel guilty. Daisy doesn’t want you to pity her. I doubt she even have an ounce of self pity in her body. So, you can feel bad for her, miss her and empathize with her, but you shouldn’t feel guilty about things you can’t help. The hospital and the university physically won’t let you sit by her side 24/7, so no one expects you to.
JULIET, 3:17PM: I expect myself too, though. I expect myself to be there. I even asked one of the nurses whether it would kill them to let me sleep there.
JOEY, 3:18PM: They denied you that, didn’t you?
JULIET, 3:20PM: Yes, on the grounds that Daisy needs to rest. I got a text from her at 6AM this morning.
JOEY, 3:21PM: Boredom makes her doze more though. When you’re there she sleeps less.
JULIET, 3:22PM: Daisy sleeps when I’m there too.
JOEY, 3:23PM: But she tried not to. When does class start for you?
JULIET, 3:24PM: 3:30. Shit, I should probably go.
JOEY, 3:27PM: Probs. See you for dinner tomorrow though?
JULIET, 3:29PM: After 7 and I’m good. Text me time and place tomorrow. XxJ
JOEY, 3:30PM: Have fun in class.
* * *
DAISY, 4:32PM: I’m out. The doctor will be here in half an hour. Where are you?
JULIET, 4:35PM: On my way. How was it?
DAISY, 4:37PM: Boring. My head hurts now.
JULIET, 4:38PM: am in lobby. Will be right there.
* * *
JOEY, 5:58PM: What was the result? Is she okay?
JULIET, 6:02PM: She’s fine. It’s just a fractured cheek bone. She could be discharged as early as Tuesday. The hospital is in direct contact with her Dad to evaluate her condition, the means by which she’ll travel and her general health.
JOEY, 6:03PM: She’s leaving tomorrow?!
JULIET, 6:05PM: No way in hell. She’s leaving Friday because her Dad plans to drive her down. The hospital wants to monitor her until then, in case the wound acts up again. It’s a miracle she got the CAT scan this early anyway.
JOEY, 6:06PM: Okay.
* * *
GRACE, 6:00PM: I just shut the shop. Where are you?
JULIET, 6:01PM: With Daisy in St Luke’s. She’s asleep. I would love the company if you want to come.
GRACE, 6:02PM: I’ll be there in fifteen minutes. How did her scan go?
JULIET, 6:07PM: It went well. She doesn’t have any internal bleeding; her fractured cheekbone will heal.
GRACE, 6:08PM: That’s good. Like I said, just procedure.
JULIET, 6:10PM: Yeah. It’s just kind of harrowing.
GRACE, 6:12PM: I understand. What’s her full name?
JULIET, 6:13PM: You’re at the hospital already? She’s called Daisy Sarah Young and she’s on the 10th Floor.
GRACE, 6:15PM: Wonderful. Am in lift.
* * *
DAISY, 8:19PM: Where are you? You and Grace were here just a second ago.
JULIET, 8:20PM: Sweetie, a second go was at 7.15pm. We were shooed out by the nurses at 7.30 when you fell asleep. We went down to that thai place to grab a bite to eat where we are now.
DAISY, 8:20PM: Oh. That CAT scan really threw me off. I’m feeling as bad as yesterday again.
JULIET, 8:21PM: Do you want me to come? Ask for some painkillers.
DAISY, 8:30PM: Don’t worry. I got some ibuprofen and I’m sure I’ll be right as rain in ten minutes. If you’re still with Grace tell her I loved the flowers. :P I just realised they’re all daisies.
JULIET, 8:32PM: Ladies and Gentlemen, my best friend; the brightest crayon in the box.
DAISY, 8:49PM: Shut up. XD You’ll come by tomorrow morning, right?
JULIET, 8:57PM: I’ll be there first thing. Promise.
DAISY, 9:07PM: With coffee?
JULIET, 9:09PM: No chance in hell.
DAISY, 9:23PM: I love you too.
JULIET, 9:24PM: XOXOXO!
