Summary: Young Gareth shouldn't have to know intimately the difference in smell between bacon culled from swine and that of long pig. Unfortunately, his parents were playing hooky in the stockyards during that particular lecture in remedial parenting.
Gareth hated adults growing up, hated everything about them. All throughout elementary he'd been assigned to journal his vacations, his teachers smiling encouragingly, and Gareth would roll his eyes; he was a child, not a newborn.
Christmas, obviously, was open season on peri, and summer meant hustling. Memorial day found the Speights racketing the battle weary dead.
Gareth sat at the breakfast table, bacon uncomfortably evocative and saturated with grease, and simply wrote, "Made first batch of bacon. Considering vegetarianism."
He'd escape Kentucky if he had to crawl bloody across the state line. This he never wrote, but it was there if sought.
