The door flew open and Rune sprinted through as fast as his short legs could carry him, with Tish close on his heels. He rounded the corner, passing within inches of the counter. Without so much as a glance, he hopped over the broom that leaned against the wall and landed with a splat, as mud covered shoes struck the floor on the other side. He slid across the floor and skidded to a stop mere inches before the looming form of the innkeeper.
“What’s the meaning of this?” Berna demanded, with a vicious shake of her wooden spoon at the mud spattered kitchen, as Tish collided with him from behind.
Both children cringed at her tone. With bowed heads, they fetched the mops and cleared away the mess. Though, when her mother wasn’t looking, Tish was quick to jab him in the ribs and tell him he was ‘it’.
As he stalked from the muddy kitchen of his new home, Rune wondered if his expression held half the menace of the one that had always stopped him in his tracks. Masakari stared at him in dumbfounded confusion as he shoved the mop into her hands and reminded her that she most certainly did not have any servants here.
