Ilya ran a finger slowly around the rim of her glass, focusing her eyes on the red liquor that swirled inside as she fought to keep them open. The cool evening breeze that stirred her hair and the dry, rambling cadence of Masakari’s voice, as she eyed their surroundings and mused how they might best be defended, both served to drive them shut.

There was a rustling of boots through the grass. Ilya jerked her head up to find Rune, flushed and frowning, as long strides carried him into the garden. Masakari’s voice trailed off, brows arched as she looked to the newcomer as well.

Ilya offered the man a smile. “How are you fairing?”

“All right,” said Rune, his hand wearing a path over the back of his neck. “I guess,” he added with a glance towards the door. “But, Masakari, I think your, uh, boyfriend is in the broom closet with one of the serving girls.”

“I know,” said Masakari, a thin smile on her lips as she brought her glass to them.

Ilya put her hand to her mouth to hide her laughter as Rune’s jaw dropped and the color drained from his face.

“You know?” said Rune, head turning rapidly between Masakari and the house. “But he’s- I mean-”

Wine glass still casually balanced in her hand, Masakari simply shrugged. “I would be surprised were he not.”

Rune’s brows knit and Ilya began to wonder if he might rub a hole in his neck. “And you don’t care?” he said.

“Not so long as it keeps his hands off of me.”

Ilya turned away as Rune groped in vain for words, no longer able to supress her laughter. She caught sight of Dalton, who shot her a quizzical look as he strode up the path to meet them.

“Why all the fuss?” said Dalton, slipping an arm around her.

Ilya swallowed her laughter and leaned into the warmth of his chest, tilting her head back so her cheek brushed his. She smiled as he pulled his arm more tightly around her middle, and her hand wound another lazy circle around her cup. “Rune just nearly walked in on your brother.”

Another giggle burst from her, and she felt, rather than saw, Dalton’s grin. “It was bound to happen sooner or later.”

“You know,” said Rune, shaking his head as he looked between the three of them. “I thought I was beginning to understand things a bit.”
