I'm not quite sure this is done, but I don't think there was more to say

“Aren’t you missing something?”

Farran saw no merit in dignifying such a foolish question with a response. Nonetheless, her eyes traced the configuration before her. Candles stood as close to upright as the unevenness of the grass would permit; red paired with blue, black with white, green the solitary peak of the five-pointed star. The central offering plate was piled with fragrant wildflowers. Not a thing was lacking, except, perhaps, quiet.

“I… um… I’m sorry," he said. "I guess I have it wrong. I mean, you would know.”

She turned to study the man who had intruded on her daily ritual. Rune stood a few paces behind her, one hand clamped over the back of his neck. His shirt hung like a set of curtains over his ribs, though the sleeves barely stretched past his elbows, and the belt that secured his pants, the bottoms of which dangled well above a pair of boney ankles, was wrapped twice around his waist.

“Why you?” she said.

“Huh?”

“What makes a god want to talk to you?”

Rune’s mouth fell open and his fingers wore steady tracks across the back of his neck.

“It’s not as if I expect a personal greeting myself, but at least I know a proper prayer circle when I see one. There are plenty of people who have dedicated their lives to her service. And then you… What makes you so special?”

He grinned, an awkward expression, as his jaw never quite managed to close itself. “You think I haven’t wondered that?”

Farran frowned. She’d expected some clever answer, indignation at the very least. She turned back to her circle. “What does she say?”

There was a rustling in the grass, and Rune settled beside her. “What? You think we chat?” he said. She looked up and there was that grin again. Rune shrugged. “I’ve only heard her a few times. I’m not even sure it was a god. She didn’t exactly take the time to introduce herself.”

“What else would it be?”

“Not sure,” he said. “I’ve just never been quite convinced it was a god. I guess I couldn’t see why one would want to talk to me either.”
