smoke “I’m sorry.”
Rune barely looked up at her, clenching his fist around something unseen. “Sorry you said it, or sorry I was there to hear it?”
Lyssa put on the best smile she could manage and said the first thing that came to mind. “Whichever will make you stop looking at me like that.”
He bowed his head back to his chest and gave it a slow shake, but Lyssa had a strong suspicion he was trying to hide a smile. “I think it might be best if you don’t say another word.”
She heaved a sigh and took a seat on the log beside him. “Look, I didn’t mean to call you a freak. What you do is amazing. And it’s useful. I mean, you heal people, and I, well, I burn things. Usually when I don’t mean to.”
“It’s not that,“ he said, spreading his hand to drop the brittle remains of what must have, until recently, been a leaf. “I mean, well, it is, but not really.”
“What then?”
Deep blue eyes locked on hers for a long moment in silence, as if he were as uncertain what he might say next as she was. “I thought you trusted me more than that.”
Lyssa raised a brow. “You notice I didn’t tell Ski either,” she said.
“I know. I just thought you and I, well…” His hand drifted to what seemed to be its favorite place, at the back of his neck. When it withdrew, he was grinning, almost foolishly. “I mean,” he continued in a tone that threatened to give way to laughter. “Who better to confide in than another freak?”
“Rune, you’re not-”
He cut her off with a wave of his hand. “Forget it.”
“I’m sorry.” Her hand came to rest on his thigh in what she hoped he would take as a sympathetic gesture.
“Really,” he said, laying his own hand over hers. “Forget it. I overreacted.”
“No more secrets. I promise,” she said. Her smile returned as she gave his leg a squeeze. She cocked her head to catch those eyes again and was pleased to see her smile returned. “Now, you want to help me figure out just what sort of good burning things is supposed to do for me?”
Rune laughed. “Sure, who better than another-”
“Don’t even say it.” She tried to scowl but found herself laughing too.
