“She is absolutely beautiful.”
Lyssa glanced Ski’s way and wondered if she had ever seen her sister’s mouth hang open for such a long time, before her own astonished gaze drifted back to her mother. Mara smiled and cooed as she bounced in the arms of her grandmother. Lyssa shook her head a time or two, even tried giving herself a pinch, but the scene remained unchanged.
“Whatever do you keep looking at me like that for?” Mother asked.
“You’re not screaming,” said Lyssa.
Mother shook her head, still smiling at the baby. “No, dear.”
Lyssa gave her sister another glance and found her to be of no help. “I thought there would be screaming.”
“No, dear.”
“Why?”
“I suspect such a thing would do little good at this point.” That never stopped her before. The blonde brow Ski raised told her that a similar thought had occurred to her.
“So,” said Lyssa. “You’re not going to tell me how disappointed you are?”
“Not at the moment.”
“Or that I’ve screwed things up yet again?” she added, wondering what possessed her to continue. Ski’s confusion was geared now at her rather than Mother. Surely she was about to bring the tirade on herself.
“I suspect you have come to that conclusion well enough on your own,” Mother said in that same maddeningly calm tone.
“Not even that you’ve been expecting this?” she ventured, bracing herself for the outburst that had to be coming.
“I have been telling you as much for years,” she said, Finally meeting her gaze, she flashed what Lyssa would have sworn was a grin, had she thought the woman capable of such a thing. “Seems I was right.”
“But-” said Lyssa.
“I should think you have played the scene out in your head more than enough times. Right now, I much prefer enjoy my granddaughter than have such a conversation.“ With a sigh, Lyssa finally let herself settle back into her chair. Mother’s eyes narrowed and her voice took on the slightest edge. “That said, I will not have you think, for so much as a moment, that I do not mean even one of the words I simply choose not to speak.” Lyssa swallowed hard as she and Ski exchanged another nervous look.
