‘Verse: ✦ Standalone ✦
Challenges/Toppings/Extras: Summer Challenge ‘14: Special Brownie #14 (What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten) & Akutaq #11 (breakup), Rocky Road #19 (the breakfast table) + Pocky + Cherry (a different style of poem than I’m used to)
Rating: G
Title: Breakup
Summary: You’re already gone.
Notes: Well, I’m not using breakup purely in the Alaskan context after all. But I guess the second line counts as a nod to the season.
you
in springtime
in our fifth year
you
our child clinging to your hand
our china shattered at your feet
you told me you were already gone.
you told me
new leaves had grown over your heart
new starts had blossomed in your mind
you told me
you can’t grow an evergreen in the desert
you can’t keep a fire burning in the rain
you can’t keep a fire burning for me.
you won’t keep going on like this.
and I break my fast alone
in a cafe full of people
on someone else’s china.
