Summary: Kira wonders about how her pregnancy is different.
Notes: Takes place about 2.5 years after the end of NIEE proper. Jez/Beau (Corwin), Ani/Ren (Renie) and Jay/Stella already have kids at this point and Stella’s pregnant for #2. Kira, unbeknownst to her, is pregnant with twin boys.
Kira heard the door slam and wiped off her hands, peeking into the inn’s common room hopefully. “Bri! Thank goodness, I’m starving.”
Her husband grinned and held up a basket. “I want it noted that you are weird.”
“Don’t call me weird when I’m carrying your spawn,” she said, leaning across the bar and neatly snagging the basket from him.
“Your spawn too.”
“Not with the way I’m eating,” she muttered.
It was early afternoon, mid-week, and the inn they ran with the help of their friends and old comrades-in-arm, Dunkin and Kilo Kramer, was quiet. Kira slipped out from behind the bar and slid into the nearest table. “How’s Stella?” she asked as she opened the spread and sighed in delight.
Bri slid in across from her, grabbing a roll and a piece of cheese. “She’s good. Getting larger, as you know. Jay’s beside himself with glee and being smug about it.”
“And Renie and Corwin?”
“Cute a lot, cry a lot, eat a lot, poop a lot. You know, typical babies. Kira, you just saw them last weekend.”
“A lot could happen in three days,” she said as she stuffed half an apple in her mouth.
He looked amused, although whether at her eating habits these days or her comment, Kira couldn’t tell. “But nothing has. Why exactly did I have to go up to the castle to get you lunch?”
“Because I’m hungry,” she mumbled, “and, nothing personal, but the cooks at the castle are really, really good.”
“You didn’t mind my cooking before the kid.”
“And I’m sure I won’t mind it after the kid,” she said.
Bri rolled his eyes and leaned back in his chair, watching her eat as he calmly munched his cheese. “You do realize you’re up to six meals a day.”
“Don’t even think about calling me fat,” she warned, waving a banana at him.
“I wasn’t. That’s the weird part.”
“It’s weird that I’m not fat? Gee, Brighton, I love you too,” she said, shooting him a glare as she plopped a couple slices of meat onto some bread and cheese and popped them in her mouth.
“No, I mean, it’s just like you’re eating for a small army.”
“Any child of yours is likely to create the same level of havoc.”
“Why exactly are you not taking responsibility for our child today?”
“Because I’m starving all the time and, if I’m not starving, I’m heaving in the outhouse. It’s your damn kid.”
He eyed her and then made the prudent decision. “Yup, my kid.”
“Good,” she told him and returned her full attention to the food, although she had to admit he had her thinking. She’d been around plenty of pregnant people, including Jez and Ani the year before and Stella, who was about three months ahead of her, and none of them ate quite like she did. She was also almost the same size as Stella, despite only being three months in instead of almost six. She glanced down at her stomach and placed a hand on it thoughtfully. “I think I’m going to visit the castle this afternoon.” She’d wondered about this before but had yet to say anything. Bri would just make some crack, more than likely.
He stared at her. “If you’re just going to go visit, why did I have to hike up there for food?”
“Because I decided right now.”
Bri threw up his hands. “Pregnant people are weird,” he announced for, what Kira was sure, was not the last time.
She kicked him hard under the table, smirking when he yelped and grabbed his leg.
“Kira!”
“You asked for it. Dunkin and Kilo will be back by dinner.”
“What about you?”
She grinned. “Depends on what the cooks are making.”
He rolled his eyes. “Do not walk back here by yourself after dark.”
“Yes, sir.” She stuffed the last bit of food in her mouth and stood, moving around to his side of the table. Kira leaned down and kissed him on the cheek. “I’m sorry pregnant women are weird.”
He laughed. “At this rate, I’ll get used to it just in time for you to pop the kid out.”
“Sounds about right,” she said easily, grabbing her jacket and the basket. Maybe Jez or Ani or both wouldn’t be too busy and she could pick their minds about pregnancy. For a moment, she wished she could ask her mother, before pushing that thought away. No use dwelling on the what could have beens. She glanced back at her husband, who had hopped up to go do who-knew-what, and smiled. Even if there was something different about her pregnancy, she knew in her heart there was nothing wrong. Whistling quietly, she headed out the door.
