Grant called while she was admiring her ring; his name on the caller ID made her smile. "Hello, love."
"Hey, baby," he said, warmly. "Ready for the party?"
She blinked. "Party?"
He sighed, and she immediately felt ashamed, even before he said, disappointed, "The party, Gina. The one we're going to tonight? I told you yesterday."
"I'm sorry," she said. "I must have forgotten."
"That's okay, baby," he said, his voice comforting again. "Just make sure you dress nicely. I want you to look pretty. I want to show you off."
"Of course," she said, and hung up, feeling warm.
--
He arrived at at seven-thirty, prompt as always. Gina was ready and waiting for him. Grant didn't like to be kept waiting, and she liked being on time-- a win-win situation.
"Baby," he said, kissing her on both cheeks. "You look nice."
She hoped for something a little more effusive than 'nice'-- she was wearing a slinky red dress that she knew he liked on her, heels, her favorite gold jewelry-- but she dimpled at him nonetheless. "Thank you."
He looked her over, adjusted the neckline of her dress downward a little-- she flushed-- then offered his arm. "Shall we?"
--
She'd hoped to be able to mingle a little, but Grant never let her off his arm. He showed her off, introduced her to everyone they met, praising her beauty and poise, then started talking to his friends, patting her hand every so often. Gina toyed with her drink and smiled at people, bored out of her mind.
Her friends were just across the room, but he wouldn't let go of her hand. She tugged once, gently, and he detached himself from the conversation just long enough to whisper, "Just one more minute."
She sighed, and stayed where she was.
--
Grant abandoned her by the refreshments later, after her friends had left. Bored and lonely, she picked over the hors d'oeuvres.
The guy came up to her then, a handsome man with lovely eyes. He leaned on the table, smiled. "You look lonely."
She smiled, but said, "Thanks, but I'm engaged."
"What, you can't talk to anybody else?" He stuck his hands in his pockets. "Just wanted to keep you company."
She smiled wider, and was about to reply when Grant came up, yanked her hard to his side, and hissed, "Stay away from my fiancee" before pulling her away.
--
"How could you?" he raged at her, later, in the car. "Gina, those are my classmates! The people who are going to hire me someday! How could you embarrass me like that in front of them?"
"I don't understand what I did," she said, feeling helpless. "I just talked to him, Grant."
"You made me look like an idiot and yourself look like a whore," he snapped.
Gina straightened in her chair, suddenly furious. "You have no right..."
"I'm your fiance, I have every right!"
She pressed her lips together and turned to face the window, tuning out his words.
--
At her apartment, she opened the car door and was halfway out when Grant grabbed her arm. She turned on him, furious, but the expression he wore melted her anger before he even spoke.
"I'm so sorry, baby," he said. "It's just... well, I see you with other guys, and I get so jealous. You know men look at you and they only think one thing, and... oh, baby, it would just kill me if you left me."
"Oh, Grant." She got back in. "I'd never leave you. I love you."
He leaned forward, pressed his forehead against her shoulder.
--
She hadn't meant to let him stay the night, but he'd come up to talk out the party, and before she knew it he'd bent her over the couch, his mouth on hers, and then on her cheeks, her neck, her breasts. She loved him, so she let it happen.
He woke her up with breakfast in bed, hand-fed her strawberries, brought her to a gentle orgasm before he kissed her and left her lying in bed, pleased and warm.
She thought drowsily that he must really love her, and smiled at the glint of the ring on her hand.
