Notes: Halloween 2007. 5 years after my last piece. If I could do any sort of art, I would totally illustrate this piece. My cousin owns both the chicken and frog costumes (and her boys refuse to wear the chicken too), my roommate this year gave me the idea for Beau and Jessie, I was totally a soccer player a few years when I got older and needed a quick costume and my friends and I were Secret Service in college *recycles ideas* I will definitely be revisiting this AU at some point!
Jez firmly affixed the wig on her head and gave it a little shake to make sure it wouldn’t dislodge easily. “Are you two ready?” she called.
Jay bounded into her room and beamed, witch’s hat crookedly perched on his head, lightning bolt scar looking perfect. “Your mom is awesome.”
“As long as the chicken costume stays with Bean,” she said but grinned. “Russ!”
“I’m here,” her friend said, appearing in the doorway, hair dyed temporarily flaming red. He straightened his robes. “If we don’t leave now, we’re gonna be late meeting the others.”
Jez drew the stick she had fashioned into a wand. “Ready!”
The three fourth graders bounded down the stairs, not surprised to find Colin waiting for them in the foyer. “What took you so long?” the ten-year-old asked. “I’ve been ready for ages.”
“You’re also going as a soccer player, which is lame. You just finished your season.”
He grinned. “Exactly. Easy peasy then. I’ll still get as much candy as you three. C’mon, everyone’s meeting at the Highcastles. Mom, we’re leaving!”
“Be careful! If Patrick can’t go with you, you call me, understand?”
“Yes, Mom,” both Lockholmes chorused and then bolted out the door.
Not surprisingly, everyone already had gotten there before them. A bit more surprisingly was the addition of Isabelle with Bean, in the now infamous chicken costume, and a stroller and Mrs. Campbell with her daughter, Morgan, who was a few months younger than Bean. The Campbells had just moved into the neighborhood earlier in the year and Ry reported that Morgan was cute, as far as two-year-olds went and she and Bean got along well. Jez had to agree that Morgan was pretty cute, wearing an adorable green frog costume.
Jez glanced at Ry who looked caught between concerned and put out that Isabelle was accompanying them. She was distracted, though, as the others clustered around. “You guys look great! So jealous you had the idea first,” Jessie said with a grin.
Beau bounced over, armed with his father’s camera - borrowed with permission this time - and held it up. “Say Expecto Patronum!”
The three did as ordered, pointing their homemade wands at him.
“Perfect,” Beau said, slinging the camera over his shoulder.
Jessie slung an arm over Beau’s shoulder, their inflatable duckies bumping.
“What exactly are you two?” Colin asked, amused.
“Tacky tourists. Jessie’s idea. Don’t we look totally obnoxious?” The pair wore extra large sunglasses, ugly visors, inflatable rafts with heads around their waists, gaudy Hawaiian shirts and flip flops, despite the fact it wasn’t the warmest Halloween on record.
Jez giggled. “Yes. I’d hate to have to deal with you.” She then looked around at the rest of her friends. Stella was instantly recognizable as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, wearing a cute plaid dress and carrying a little basket with a stuffed Toto. Ren and Sorin, at 16, stood in the background, trying to look too cool for this, although Jez knew from her own brothers that they still liked the loot, even if they sometimes felt ridiculous. The pair were wearing matching dark clothes with an earbud in one year and fake pistols strapped on their belt. Their shirts were decorated with the words Secret Service and they wore dark caps pulled low.
Bri’s made her laugh. She’d known he was going to be Captain Jack Sparrow, but his costume was next to perfect, complete with tattoos, hat and mannerisms. Ry’s was unsurprisingly as a mad scientist with fake dripping blood and test tubes. Her younger friend bounced over to her. “D’you like it?” she asked. “Daniel helped me do it!”
“It looks great!”
Mick lurked by Ren and Sorin, decked out in a simple, but obvious ninja costume. Jez personally found that rather apt, considering the boy’s quiet and protective nature. Last but not least, and as unsurprising as the others, was Ani, bouncing on Sorin’s other side, dressed in a fancy princess dress. Jez suspected she was Amy Adams’ character from the upcoming movie, Enchanted, which was so typical.
“Are we all ready to go?” Beau’s dad asked the assembled kids. Every year, the parents took turn taking the kids - this was the first year Stella’s parents had deemed her old enough to not need them, for example.
“Ready!” came the overwhelming response.
Patrick grinned. “Okay, everyone gather together for a picture first.” Beau reluctantly handed the camera over for a minute.
Amongst grumbling, the thirteen kids gathered in the picture. Mrs. Campbell and Isabelle parked the strollers with the toddlers on either side and then stepped back out of the way, both beaming at the mass of costumed children.
“One, two, three, cheese!” After the flash faded, he passed the camera back to his youngest. “I’ll make sure everyone’s parents get one,” he said and then gestured for them to be on their way, falling into step with the other parents.
