Story Arc:
Changing Tides Title: Unfamiliar feelings
Summary: Helen doesn't know why she becomes angry when Nate goes on dates. Her friend Diane has a good idea on why that happens.
Notes: This is when Helen and Nate are refusing their attraction to each other. Diane is one of Helen's best friends and loves to tease her about her crush on Nate. Diane and Nate are friends as well.
Helen sat in her room staring at her phone irritably. She didn’t know why she was so angry. It was normal for Nate to go on dates. He was a young man and young men went on dates. If she knew that then why was she so angry? It didn’t make any sense to her. Helen jumped when her phone sounded off. She listened to the ringtone sighing in disappointment at familiar tone of her best friend.
Helen reached for her phone flipping it open. “Hi,”
“Hi, gee you sound happy to hear me.”
Helen giggled, “Sorry Diane I guess I’m feeling weird today.”
“Oh no is it mother nature?” Diane asked.
Helen shook her head picking with loose strand on her comforter. “No nothing like that. It’s just…um…”
“Is it something Nate related?” Diane asked in a joking tone.
Helen stuttered over the phone as Diane laughed, “I knew it! You are so in love with him!”
“I am not! I just worry about him that’s all. You worry about him too.”
“Yeah, but I don’t want to get in his pants.” Diane snickered as Helen clicked her tongue angrily.
“That’s not true!” Helen exclaimed sitting up in her bed.
“I told you.” Diane said in a sing song voice.
Helen groaned falling back on her bed her hair splaying out on the pillow. “I don’t get it Di. Why I am…um…”
“Jealous?”
“No not that I just feel weird. Like I feel that the girls he goes out with won’t understand him. I’ve seen some of those girls he goes out with. I don’t think they see Nate. I think all they see is his father Daniel and the Anderson name. Is that wrong?” Helen asked.
“I don’t think so. It’s normal to feel that way about Nate. You two have been best friends since you were little. You know things about him that others wouldn’t know. He knows things about you that others will never know. It’s alright to be worried about him. I would be worried if you weren’t worried about him.” Diane said.
Helen smiled, “Thanks I feel better now. I’m still confused about something though.”
“What’s that?” Diane asked.
Helen nibbled on her bottom lip before answering. “Why am I so an-wait there’s a call on the other line.”
“Ok I’ll still be here.” Diane said.
“Ok.” Helen said as she clicked over. “Hello?”
“Hi kitty.”
“Nate! Hi wolfie wait I thought you were on your date?” Helen asked.
“Um…well…that ended already. It was something short, but I wanted to call you to see how school was?” Nate asked.
Helen noticed the hesitation, but didn’t question it. “It was fine. How were your classes?”
“They were good boring, but good. So I watched this show last night and…” Nate started when Helen interrupted him. “Nate I’m sorry, but I got Diane on the other line.”
“Oh Di is there? Cool tell her I said hi. Hey want to click her over?” Nate asked.
“Sure let me ask her.” Helen said.
“Alright.” Nate said.
Helen clicked back over to Diane. “Hey Di.”
“Hey who was that? Let me guess, um, Nate right?” Diane asked.
Helen picked with her comforter as Diane giggled, “I so knew it. So should I go?”
“No do you want to join us in a three way?” Helen asked.
“Of course I wouldn’t miss the chance to tease you two. Click me over!” Diane said happily.
Helen laughed, “Alright I will hold on.” She pressed the button clicking over to Diane then over to Nate.
“Alright hello Nate?” Helen asked.
“Yeah,” Nate said.
“Di?” Helen asked.
“I’m here.” Diane said.
Helen smiled sitting back against the pillows. “Good well who wants to start it?”
“I do, I do! So tell me when are you going to ask Helen out Nate?” Diane asked.
“Um, well you see I um…” Nate stuttered.
Helen squeaked shaking her head in disbelief. “Di, please, not tonight.” Hmm I wonder how would it be to go out with him? She shook her head again placing the thought in the back of her mind. There was no way she liked her best friend. Diane was just being silly as usual. Helen nodded at her thoughts before joining the conversation. She ignored the warm feeling in her chest when Nate laughed.
*~*~*
That night when Helen laid in bed her thoughts returned as she stared at the ceiling. Why do I feel like that every time he goes on a date? I mean he’s going to get a girlfriend sooner or later. It sucks when I think about that. Oh well I’m sure I’ll get over it. She turned over reaching for alarm clock on the night table. She hit the button turning back around to fall asleep.
