It’s only seven years…
Allyson drummed her fingernails against the kitchen table. Her phone lay at the center; she had pushed it far enough away from her easy grasp to avoid temptation. Two messages from that bartender…a sudden cure for boredom appeared in the form of a mischievous blond English kid with gorgeous blue eyes and one naughty grin four nights ago. Some funny guardian spirit brought her into his presence.
I’m not old enough to be his mother. I could have babysat for him, though.
The phone jumped away from the center of the table, then danced toward her fingertips. Allyson had put on the “vibrate” setting yesterday afternoon when Jamie’s second message was done recording. She didn’t feel peculiar giving out her number, because he wasn’t interested. He knew she was thirty-five, and she knew he was twenty-eight. Surely he wanted her number because of some dare among his friends? It was ridiculous to imagine anyone younger could actually think…but one message appeared in her voice mail the morning after her pub visit. The second one came along yesterday, and now, perhaps, a third message? Well, it could be Sana from the yoga studio, asking her to pull a double tonight. It could be Mr. Olliver’s newest paralegal asking for the location of yet another missing file. Maybe it was Kelly; her sister was just getting past the first week of morning sickness, but still needed comfort on random occasions. Anyone might be calling…but the fluttery tumble in her stomach let Allyson know it was the young charmer that caused her phone to bounce toward her left hand.
What now? If she finally spoke with Jamie, that was no guarantee anything big would happen. She could indulge tradition and play the cat/mouse courtship game. But she was no cat, and Jamie wasn’t a mouse. If two people were caught up in mutual attraction, why play stupid games?
Seven years, that’s no big deal. He knows my age. It doesn’t bother him. We’re both adults.
Allyson grabbed the phone on its last bounce. She pressed a button, then… “Hello?”
