That's a fun interview. I love the mention of the eight-year-old fans. Aww.
It would sure be nice if the fan love for the pairing could convince the staff to deal with it right. It sure doesn't seem like the writers/creators are much interested in it. They just throw the fandom a bone now and then and when it comes to something big (the wedding, the season 4 finale) they always seem to screw it up and ruin it.
I've recently realized it's more than that. A&E's treatment of Rumbelle is just the most obvious symptom of a systemic block. Beauty & the Beast just isn't in their wheelhouse generally. After all, they also nixed Ruby, murdered Gus-Gus/Billy the Were-Man mechanic, and completely refused to deal with Philip/Yowguai as an ongoing narrative thread. Sad really.
You make a very good point. You're probably right; they're just not equipped to deal with a lot of the plots they tried to bring up. Which is understandable when it happens to amateur fanfiction writers (I've had that problem myself), but it definitely should not be happening to people producing a very expensive television series!
