MOMents

“Ahh…” I sighed as I sat on one of the park bench on my way home, resting my aching feet. It has been a long exasperating day at work. We’ve been doing overtime again doing some last minute preparation for our latest product release. I have already changed into my casual clothes and comfortable shoes but my feet still hurt from wearing heels for the entire day. No matter how many times I’ve worn heels I still can’t get use to it.

It’s almost midnight, the park was deserted, and except for the distant sound of some cars passing by and the sound of crickets, nothing else can be heard. A soft night breeze was blowing. It was still spring and the wind carried the smell of the cherry blossoms around the park.  I closed my eyes as I contemplated on my activities of the day and pondered on the things that I will have to do tomorrow. I was already feeling more tired just by thinking of another busy day.

I was brought back to my senses when I felt the familiar long, strong arms that were wrapped around me along with a whisper to my ear, “Umma, bugeoshipeo”. I turned and looked into the eyes of my beloved 17 year old son Taemin. He was wearing the usual jogging pants, topped with a shirt and a jacket wrapped around his waist matched with rubber shoes.

“Aigoo, why do you always surprise me like that?” I asked amusingly. He just smiled mischievously like he always does. “Yah, isn’t it too late for you to be out here?” I pressed on.

“It was late, I was going to fetch you home, I was on my way when I saw you out here, then I....” he started. “Then you thought of giving your Umma a heart attack huh.” I continued for him jokingly. He was still hugging me from behind. He laughed sheepishly. He was caught.

“Umma, saranghae!” he finally said and hugged me tighter. “Aigoo, this kid really...” I thought. At that time, it seems every tiredness or weariness I felt from my work that day simply melted away and everything was set aright again. It’s amazing how one word would have that much effect on me.

“Umma, are you tired? Should I massage you? Where does it hurt? Should I carry you on my back? How about I sing for you?” he’s being fussy again as he tried to massage my shoulders while singing my favorite song. I can’t help but wonder if this kid is up to something, whatever it is, I just want to cherish moments like these. He’s grown so fast. He was already taller than me, and as he put his arm on my shoulders, I already felt somewhat safe. I somehow remembered how small he was when he was very young and I was the one protecting him but now…So this is how my mom felt then as she watched us grow up.

After a while, I asked if he would like to have some midnight snacks with me, he enthusiastically said “yes” and we went off.

We walked in the park that seems to belong only to the two of us.

I hoped, like every other mom, that he will remain like this forever.

“How was work today? Did they give you so many tasks?” he asked as we walked on. “It was fine; we made it on time. How about you, how was school?” I inquired back. “It was fun, we prepared for the festival and…” so on we went.

END.
