I really like the second one. Raven's face is low on detail (that or my monitor is really low-contrast), but still full of expression. Also, you did an excellent job with Hero's arms and hair. Hair, and especially mussy hair, is really hard to get to look anything like right.
Because he uses perspective. :\ You like Fred's stuff? I think yours sketches here are infinitely better than his. He can't draw people to save his life.
Let me clarify. I like his style. I like the fact that even though they are merely sketches, his drawings have a lot of contrast and are easy to understand. He makes good use of manga techniques to vary colors even though his palate is only in shades of gray.
My sketches aren't really prepped well for internet viewing.
As far as his people go (checks Megatokyo briefly), he's gotten better. I personally haven't looked at his stuff since Largo left and the storyline went to "manga soap opera land". But if his fan-base is any indication, no one but me cares. ^_^"

I'll work harder on giving my work better contrast. How on earth does Megatokyo make pencil sketches look good?

I love the expressions in the first one a lot.
