After this. This was more than needed. Several days of sun, warm sand, exotic meals, and time with Jack that didn't involve feeling like they were being emotionally pulled through a meat grinder. It was so good, he didn't want it to stop ( Read more... )

Jack had just stepped out of the shower when the Doctor returned, and he was standing in his undone trousers, shirtless, with a towel around his neck and his hair messed in all different directions.

He turned around and grinned wide at the Doctor. His smiling was easier now; easier than it had been in many many years. He carried himself differently. It was remarkable the difference a happy few days could give.

"I don't care what they call it as long as it tastes good," he pointed out, nodding towards him. "What did you get?" he asked, stepping over and giving him a quick and gentle kiss.

"I'm not sure," the Doctor admitted, looking at the bright pink objects on the plate. "It looks vaguely meat-like, I think. But that could just be the dressing, too."

He put one of the two-pronged forks into the dish, and it broke apart, like it was made of a very fine porcelain. He picked one of the pieces up and bit into it. It tasted sort of like egg.

"It's not bad," he said, offering a broken piece to Jack. "So, today, I was thinking we could climb up that mountainside, see where the fireflies are hiding."

Jack raised an eyebrow and tried not to laugh at the Doctor manhandling the food. He reached over and took a piece for himself, popping it into his mouth.

"Someone's getting itchy fingers," he said around a mouthful of food, shooting him a knowing grin. They'd had a great few days, a really wonderful few days, but Jack knew how eager the Doctor was for adventure, and him too. They were ready for it.

"Jack Harkness not enough for you?" he teased, nudging him.

He knew though, and he'd even pre empted it.

"Come on," he said, throwing his towel down and pulling a tshirt over his head before reaching for a clean shirt he'd fetched from the TARDIS. "Lets eat that out on the beach."

"Oh, you know," the Doctor said. "Can't live on...well, that. And food and relaxation forever. We actually will end up retiring, if we're not careful."

He grabbed the plate and his coat. They'd leave, eventually. The TARDIS was ready to travel again. And, in his own way, so was the Doctor. It was about time to travel. About time to go out and have an adventure again.

"Bit bright out this morning," he said, squinting as he stepped out the door.
