Follows this.During their time apart, the Doctor didn't dream. Dreaming wasn't common for Time Lords in general, but while Jack was away or in his extended coma, there was no accidental glimpse into the human part of the Doctor's psyche ( Read more... )

Jack was asleep. He was dreaming, maybe. No, definitely. He dreamt and he could hear rain, stuck in the middle of a storm, the force of it pounding down against the glass in front of him, stronger and stronger, making it harder to see, harder to navigate.

Thunder cracked through the skies and it lit up white with lightning.

And then he was awake.

His eyes opened sharply, and he felt like he'd been shaken awake. He hadn't, of course, and he was still there, lying where he fell asleep a few hours before, his arms wrapped tightly around the Doctor. He realised then, it wasn't him awaking, it was the Doctor, and it had knocked back along the connection.

"Morning," he said quietly, looking at him.

He felt unsettled. Like the morning of a battle. There was a lot to come.

"Too early for you," the Doctor said, reaching over and patting his shoulder. "Connection woke you up."

Would it always be like that? The Doctor's mind waking, keeping Jack from his normal sleep? Would the Doctor have to rest periodically in order to allow Jack to rest? Or would Jack have to adapt? Or could they break it somehow? There was nowhere he could check.

"Try to get back to sleep," he said, quietly. "I won't go anywhere."

Immediately, Jack wanted to argue. No, he couldn't go back to sleep, not when they had so much to do, not when so much was going on. But at the same time, getting up would be ending this moment, as close to that as it was already.

He was still tired too, and he could tell he hadn't woke naturally. Maybe he'd perfect that, maybe he wouldn't, he still had so much to learn. They both did. So much, if they ever got the chance. Maybe they'd find a way to keep it in check.

So instead of argue, he took a long breath and tightened his arms briefly around the Doctor.

"Fine," he said. "But if you try going anywhere without me, she'll wake me up," he said, pointing one finger up to the ceiling, referring to the TARDIS.

He let his eyes close again, and to his surprise, he found he could drift off.

To the Doctor's surprise, as Jack drifted off to sleep, he could hear the TARDIS agreeing with him. She was as worried as Jack was, she was as afraid as he was. She didn't want to lose the Doctor either.

He looked over to the chair, where the vortex manipulator was still tucked into his pocket. He could go. He could run. He could try to sort this out on his own. But, when did that ever work out for him? For them?

Instead, he lay in bed and looked up at the ceiling, trying to see if he could feel Jack's dreams while he waited.
