"That's good," the Doctor said, picking up on Donna's psychic waves. He could feel her emotions, and he was surprised by how much calm she was radiating with her thoughts. He wasn't that surprised, though. Donna was brilliant ( Read more... )

"Introductions. Right," she murmured out loud, surprised that she'd even forgotten to say who she was. How often had they gone somewhere and identified themselves straight away? Never mind they were usually sneaking into some place where they didn't quite belong...

"My name is Donna, and this is the Doctor." She gave her friend a little smile and continued. "Can you tell us your name, sweetheart?"

Hello!

That was all the Doctor thought, letting Donna take control. She could be just as rude as he was, but she knew when to be empathic when he...well, never quite figured out his timing. He put a hand reassuringly on her shoulder.

For a moment, there was no response and she began thinking that perhaps calling it 'sweetheart' was some sort of space equivalent of an awful insult. About what, she had no clue and didn't want to start thinking of any possibilities in case she accidentally sent them along to the creature.

But finally, just as she was about to open her mouth and tell the Doctor to take over, she heard a voice somewhere in her mind. It was soft; so soft, she almost thought she'd imagined hearing it.

It said, Liruun.

She couldn't quite tell if it was a male or female, but she supposed that didn't matter. It needed help all the same. "Hello Liruun. We only want to help you. Can you tell us what's the matter?"

The Doctor was concerned that it wasn't going to work. After all, Donna wasn't the strongest psychic signal in the universe. Of course, she did have a definite signal, and she was far more empathic than he. Still, maybe if he just had her as a consult---

Then, suddenly, Donna was addressing the creature by name. The Doctor hadn't heard a response. He felt a juvenile stab of envy at her ability, but he shoved that away.

"Try to ask where it's from," he said. "If I can isolate it's home world, we might know exactly what---well, who--we're dealing with."
