Follows this. The warm air of the Pacific hit the Doctor as he pulled open the door to the TARDIS. A beach, as promised. It was about time he managed that. He'd always been so preoccupied with this disaster or that disaster, he'd often forgotten the little things in life, like watching the sun set over an ocean ( Read more... )

"Oh very nice!" Jack grinned as he stepped from the TARDIS. "Very very nice. Well done, Doctor." He looked out at the beach and at the waves as they gently crashed back and forth against the sand. The evening air was pleasant enough, but a little cooler than he might have expected.

"We could get cocktails!" Jack suggested with a grin before frowning, "But I don't suppose you're much of a cocktails sort of guy, are you? Mind you wouldn't have said you were a nightlife sort of guy either."

He tapped him on the arm and nodded away from the beach, "Come on, you can buy me a drink."

"You know, I get the funny feeling I might owe you a drink," the Doctor said, heading off down the beach. The sand was warm and the view was spectacular. He'd really outdone himself, if he did say so himself.

"It's strange, me thinking that," he said. "Because with the alterations on the timeline, I shouldn't have any emotions or recollection of you at all. But I feel---"

He felt like he should know him. It felt like when he first met River Song, or when Sally Sparrow handed him the folder of papers. Like time knew they needed to meet. Jack was the same way, if not more so.

"Anyway. I do love a good pina colada. Probably about time I had one, too."

Jack shot a sideways smile at the Doctor. "I'm just that good," he said with a laugh. "Once you've met Jack Harkness it's pretty hard to completely forget him, even if time tells you to."

He knew that wasn't the reason at all, but part of his mind liked to think it was.

"Hmm you love a good Pan Galactic Gargleblaster too, I seem to recall," he smirked over at him. He didn't remember where or when, but there was an odd faded memory of sitting in a booth drinking them with him. "But I doubt they sell those in 1970s Maui."

They reached the crest of the beach, and ahead lay a road with a fence along the one side.

"Mmm, touristy," he said with an air of sarcasm. "Guess the bars are the other way."

He did like a good Gargleblaster, certainly. One of his drinks of choice, especially when he was feeling terribly sorry for himself. He wondered if Jack remembered the Doctor in one of those moments, and inwardly hoped that he hadn't.

"That's not something I expected on Maui." He nodded up to the barbed wire on the top of the fences. It reminded him of something he'd see in a prison or an encampment of some sort.

"I think you're right," he said. "Let's try..." He turned around to point down the other end of the road, just in time to see a few camouflage-clad men running towards them across the sand. Armed, it appeared.

"Ah." Without hesitation, he put his hands up in surrender.
