Some of us make a good effort though.

Well, you and I both know what it's like, I think.

What would you choose?

Actually it was a very easy question.

And that is from someone who has never loved, been loved, or had sex and is older than you.

No, it really isn't. Love is wonderful, but losing is hard.

I've just grown more selfish as the years have gone on, I think.

I disagree. To have the chance to love and be loved, no matter how hard the losing might be after, is worth the risk. Sex is just sex, and I've seen enough of that.

*smiles* I've always been called a selfish and cynical bastard. It's not an age thing.

Loving is wonderful. Self-preservation is better.

Those who think "Tis better to have loved and lost" really haven't tried it.

I thought you were braver than that Doctor.

I'm brave in a lot of things, Reinette. I also know what I can do to preserve myself. To stay brave.

Your near limitless lifetime still does not mean you are the only one to know loss. Yet others survive it. Know that it is worthwhile.

I never said that it did. I just said I'd prefer to avoid it. Avoid the pain of the loss.

It pains me to know that someday I'll believe love isn't worth loss.

Do you wish you hadn't loved them? Would that be better?

You'll live a very long time, Self.

And no, no, I wouldn't want to erase what I've had. Just prevent it in the future. Keep myself as whole as I've got.

thecricketer January 18 2008, 03:26:06 UTC
Well, I always knew that. More or less.

How whole do you think you'll be, going centuries without loving anyone? You do remember how very bad at that we are, yes?

Well, you know, if the choice meant I didn't have to worry about accidently finding myself completely in love with my companion, it would make it a lot easier. Can focus on more important things.

Everyone is bound to experience heartache. It really all comes down to how we we handle it. To move on, accepting and growing from it. Not one of life's more pleasant lessons but still, one that everyone comes to learn.

Are you sure the lesson isn't the same thing we learn when we touch something that's hot and it burns? You know, don't touch it?

No one can tell another whether to love or not, it's simply not possible. But life is full of chances and adventures. You know that. And love is just another sort of adventure.
