Can you please give a source for a) two boys is sufficient, b) trying all your life but no children? Once can certainly say that people in such situations did their hishtaldus (if they did, indeed, try to the best of their capabilities) but trying your best does not fulfill the obligation... it just means that you tried your best.
(Not to discredit the sources for these opinions, if there are indeed legitimate Rabbis who issued these rulings.)
I've heard five or six of the same gender (thought five makes more sense with odd numbers being favored to even, you know?) or of course one boy and one girl.

I don't know if odd numbers of children are favored. I just thought maybe so, because other odd numbers are favored. Like you always make an odd number of eggs or if you have the choice always choose the odd number. Everything seems to be about odd numbers 613, 3 walls of sukka, 7 holes in the body, 7 years, 7 weeks, 7 days in a week, marriage is 3 people (two plush Hashem), etc etc.
