Jewish Names and Nicknames

I thought this post could interest some here too.

As you may know, i'm not a fan of dumping a -i ending on any name to make it cute. Maybe because I'm not familiar with many Jewish names having a -i nickname before reaching america except apparently in Hungary - and yes I did research. I found:

Moni for Shimon (Poland)
Mati for Mathilde (Greece)

Henny is short for Henna. It is just a Yiddish Chani/Chana. Eliyaha Dovid called Shira "Shiree" once, but mostly he calls her "baby".

Henny is a name per se, at least for some (a cousin of mine and the daughter of a rebbe I know). I've seen the rebbe's family tree and the name is far from new and not a nickname for anything.

you don't have my son's name: zakkai. Or another popular 'i' name: amitai.
