{001} ☼ Is there anybody out there?

So this is a magic journal, huh? I'd probably think that was totally weird, except it isn't the strangest thing I've heard today. What if someone wanted to write something private? Are there non-magic journals here, too? Anyway...

I greet you, Nova. I am called Sylvar. There are indeed journals which do not share their contents. They do not cost particularly much.

[Pause; she knows that drawings-of-self don't exactly reflect reality]

Forgive me, but I must ask. Are you human?

Hi Sylvar! I might get one of those journals soon, but I'd better wait until I have a job. I don't wanna spend all my money right away!

I am human. At least, I think I am. I don't actually have cat ears, if that's what you mean.

It is wise to carefully monitor what you possess. Many newborns immediately purchase more suitable clothing and personal items, and it is fortunate that the initial allowance allows for this.

I see.

I'll need some new clothes, 'cause what they gave me is really big!

Are you not human, Sylvar?

Hi, Nova! Welcome to Edensphere--my name's Cara. Edensphere is a pretty strange place, so you should get used to it.

Hi Cara! It's [tap tap tap] interesting to be here! Have you been here very long?

Interesting is a good word for it! You seem to be taking it well, anyway. And I've been here for a little over a year now.

Wow, a whole year! You must know practically everyone!

Wow, you're one of the most energetic new kids I've seen yet.

So what is the strangest thing you've heard today?

The strangest thing I've heard today? I'm not really sure. There are all kinds of funny noises around here. I heard a weird bird call! I guess that's what you get when you're hatched in a tree.

Energetic is my middle name! Nova Energetic-- uh... something! Maybe it's my last name? Who knows?

What's your name?

[There's a pause in his response, as he's kinda LOLin'.]

Give it time, and I'm sure you'll hear plenty more weird stuff where that came from.

Here's one: my name's Lea. But I'm a guy. I'm told this is weird. So now you have another thing for your list; commit it to memory.

I haven't ever met anyone named Lea, so it doesn't seem that weird to me. But I'll definitely remember it!

Have you been here long, Lea? Do you like it here?

Hey, Nova, this is Derrick. How're you feeling?

Reply

ruby_nova May 26 2010, 03:27:39 UTC
Derrick! I'm feeling all right! I'm still getting used to everything, but I think I'll be okay. I'm small but I think I'm pretty tough!

But those floating islands! I saw floating islands in my dream!

bloody_pens May 26 2010, 15:12:25 UTC
Good to hear.

... oh, really? Floating islands don't seem kooky at all to you?

ruby_nova May 26 2010, 18:12:01 UTC
No, not really. That is to say, I know it's technically weird that they're floating, but it wasn't surprising to me when I saw them. I'm gonna go exploring soon to see what they're like. The map is helpful but I want to see all that stuff in person.

It's always pleasant to see such enthusiasm and friendliness from a new arrival.

Hello and welcome, Nova. My name is Simon.

It's better to be enthusiastic and try to make the best of a weird situation than just letting yourself get depressed, right?

It's nice to sort-of meet you, Simon. I like your handwriting!

I agree. It helps that people here are largely friendly and welcoming; we are all in the same situation and have at least that much in common.

It is nice to meet you as well. In a way, journal communication is getting to know a person long before you see a face.

I'm glad that everyone has been so kind to me. I'd probably be pretty scared and confused otherwise! I mean... I'm still plenty confused, but I'm not frightened at all.

Talking over the journals is fun, but I still hope we get to meet face-to-face.
