When was it decided soulless!Sam didn't need sleep?  After all, he eats so I guess he...., you know? There is evidence (canon) that he indulges in sex, so why not sleep?   A  physical activity whereby the cells replenish and the mind re-groups, (am I over-thinking this?)  Maybe that's why he's a bit /lot lacking in compassion - no sleep makes us

The no sleeping thing is canon, too. He's said that several times that he doesn't sleep, including once when he was threatening Castiel.
