I’m mad at the movie Robots. I saw it and liked it while I was watching it, but then upon review with crownofspoons I found that my true feelings on the movie were not all smiles and giggles

I totally agree. One point that you left out is the blatant bias in gender bending. The main character, at one point, is forced to wear a hand-me-down woman's torso because his family can't afford a new one. This was portayed as funny. Robin Williams' character, Fender, ends up with a lower half of his body that includes a skirt, and even does a sexy dance to a Britney Spears song. This is portrayed as funny. Fender's sister refers to him as "my ugly sister." This is funny. When the heroes confront the evil underworld boss, they mistake her for a man. She tells them that she is a woman. They then all are horrified. One vomits and another's glass eyes shatter at the sight of her. Lesson? cross-dressing is funny, but ugly women should die.
i really want to see this movie nowkidman607April 9 2005, 02:31:58 UTC
but don't blame this movie for making fun of cross-dressing. monty python, milton berle, and kids in the hall have all done it. and they were each the best comedy of their time.
would you be happy if you had to wear your sister's dresses to school? would i laugh if you did? if you did a sexy brit spears dance in a skirt would i laugh? it's not programming young'ns to believe that it's malicious deviant behavior, it's just situational comedy.
and if you're having troubles with this movie, check out Shark Tale. it has a "shark" that wants to be a "dolphin". the religious right went crazy over it's pro-homosexual subtext.

Mocking cross dressing is not the problem. I mean, it's sort of a problem, but not that big of a one (of a one? that sounds awkward). The issue here is how the movie treated males and females differently. A man looks like a woman and it's funny. A woman looks like a man and it's horrifyingly disgusting. This reinforces the idea that attractiveness is more important for women than men and that a woman's worth is more dependent on her attractiveness.
