a most curious volume

 весьма любопытный том

And so I must report the chance discovery of a most curious volume;
Sherlock Holmes in Russia - a collection of stories from 1908
and credited to P. Nikitin and P. Orlovetz
edited by Alex Auswaks

Does anyone recognise this title -  very strange to have J.Brett on the cover!

Кто-нибудь что-нибудь знает об этой книге?
- довольно странно видеть на обложке Дж. Бретта

There is a fine jaunty intro from George Piliev detailing the complete publishing history of Holmes in Russia, excellent reading.

Очень хорошее введение. Подробная история публикаций (рассказов) о Холмсе в России.

The stories are said to be the fraudulent tales from the early 20th century - but are they themselves a hoax?
The literary quality is debatable but I found them a fun read, with many nice descriptions of Russian locations and frequent  encounters with eccentric characters - indeed I was reminded more of LenFilm's Holmes than Doyles.

Подлинные рассказы? Подделка?

Has anyone read the original Russian stories? Вы прочитали это?
Can anyone furnish me with a clue as to their origin or the mysterious translator???

i hope you will suffer my bad Russian - thanks to people that have helped!:)
