I live on Roosevelt Island (RI). It is highly gentrified these days and school is flourishing. Just a few years ago no normal parent from the island sent their kids to that school, we all went to the city and the students of that school were bused from elsewhere. These days the parents who get into G&T often stay in that school vs. sending kids to G&T across the river in Manhattan (given the commute). Island is very safe, where kids run on the streets and play in the parks without parents (because there is no through traffic), it is a nice middle between city and suburban lifestyle (it is a close neat community with many social events and interactions). Population is diverse, many europeans and working in cornell university or united nations ( ... )

Wow, that's the comment I've been waiting for! Thanks for the info, although I've still got questions. How long have you been living in RI? I haven't heard that there are Cornell University buildings. Is there a part of Cornell campus ( ... )

The decision you are making is not so much about the school, but about urban life vs. suburban life -where schooling is just a factor. I suggest you spend 4 field trips in your areas of your interest : 2 per area. The first trip should be the weekday, preferably at the time of end of school (2 - 3). You should come close to the school building and observe: the parents, the kids when they are picked up, the environment. Do it for both schools. The second trip I suggest to be a weekend: stroll along the central streets of the hood. Go to local starbucks and listen what people talk about. Come to the local market (on RI it is on Saturday). Observe interactions. Feel the vibe ( ... )

It does! I have to digest all the info, but I already have a deadline for my decision - June, 6. It's even good I have such a short and rigid timeframe, otherwise my head will blow up.... :)
