I discovered the Narnia stories when I was 18. I had then been an atheist for a decade, and I remain one. I actually didn't figure out that they were Christian-themed until I read The Last Battle! I have problems with them now, in my sixties, but they aren't a matter of Lewis's theology but of his cultural baggage.

But Lewis himself provided the model for seeing something worthwhile in other belief systems, in Aslan's words to the young Calormene in The Last Battle. If Aslan can accept devotion to a god with a vulture's head as earning credit with him, a god with an elephant head shouldn't give him trouble!

The two (of these) I've read so far are terrific - I expect it'll take me into the weekend before I've read all 39!
