Oh, wow! This was excellent!

That was an amazing paralell from Remus' view of his heroic friends to himself! Obviously Remus is going to feel cowardly, but I'd never drawn that correlation. Excellent job at finding it! - And making the reader feel it. Wow. That was just... ouch!

The repetition of "I don't know..." was a perfect demonstration of his inevitible lingering self doubts so soon after. In conjunction with the ending line that emphasizes his will to change, this piece was 100% Remus! :)

Annnnd not to be nitpicky, but I found a typo:

can fear every truly retreat from a heart too battered by life to face one more despair?

Great job! This was awesome!

Interesting exploration of different angles of temptation. It does seem that temptation to avoid the risks of more grief and heartbreak would be as great as the ones to give in.

Excellent points, regardless of the incoherency of my review, lol. ;)

Such an interesting idea--instead of Tonks being his temptation, she is the one giving him the strength to fight off the temptation to give up on himself. Fascinating ideas.

I wish I had something more constructive to say, but I'm still turning it over a few times in my head.

Just really interesting.

This piece is such an excellent characterization of Remus; it feels like you're right inside his head.

As noted above, the repeated refrain of self-doubt works very well here. And then you have:
The fear will always be with me. My doubts will never quite be gone. I know myself too well to expect otherwise. But I intend to fight them. I want this. I want her.

--which bodes well, since Remus is stronger than he thinks he is.

As always, your characterization of Remus is spot-on. I can't believe I never connected his notion of cowardliness being down to drawing comparisons to other people he counts as courageous. Which makes so much sense, given that the too mantra is all about comparison.

Well done.
