I agree with those who commented on the hard-boiled style and hints of noir. You've evoked the setting really well in this short piece-- I had half-assumed most of what was in the footnotes, just based on the contextual detail.

Janie sounds as if she's had a hard life and as if there's little chance of that changing soon. :(

This was a neat take on the prompt. I find dystopian worlds to be fascinating to read about. Interesting that the religious tokens take the meaning they do here.

Definitely sci-fi noir, if that's even a thing! Has sort of a gritty, Blade Runner quality to it! I enjoyed the bedside banter between sweets and Jamie :)
