Warning: not beta'd
As if he wasn't short enough on time, busily running errands for his parents and balancing his interests between having a life and no life, Kyuhyun decided that wasting a few more minutes - which usually dragged on to hours - on his self-entertaining computer activities was no problem.
His mother had finally had enough of his endless gaming and sent him out of the house, anywhere that was a good distance away from his dreadful electronic. Kyuhyun ended up appointed to the library, which was fine with him; they had computers there, anyhow. He seated himself at a computer in the corner of the room, hoping he wouldn't be disturbed in said location.
Too bad life didn't exactly work out the way he wished it would.
“That's why nerds make better lovers.”
That phrase caught Kyuhyun's attention.
“I mean, seriously. Have you read any of the definitions for the term “nerd”?” There was a short pause. “Of course you haven't. Here, look at this one: a stereotypical label used to describe a person that is socially inadequate. A four letter word, but a six figure income. A freaking six figure income. Who wouldn't tap one of those geniuses?”
Another voice replied. “But they're socially inadequate, which means they're out of the question.”
“That's why you have to inch closer to them slowly,” The voice replied with a bit of annoyance in his tone. “It'll be worth your time, trust me.”
“Then why haven't you gotten yourself a nerd?”
There was a short silence before Kyuhyun was startled by an abrupt slam on the table. Kyuhyun instinctively glanced in the direction of the commotion and caught site of two men standing on the row of computers across from him; one of the two, probably the one making the statements, had short puffy hair with bangs that hovered over his dark eyes.
“I told you, Eunhyuk, it takes time.”
Eunhyuk shrugged off a laugh. “Sure it does, Yesung.”
Yesung rolled his eyes and looked away. He caught Kyuhyun gaping at him and smirked. “You see, Hyuk. That's what the definition means when it says socially inadequate.” He pointed his thumb at Kyuhyun. “They think they're the only ones in the world.”
“Excuse me,” Kyuhyun coughed, realizing he was discovered. “I didn't mean to stare."
Yesung shook his head with a polite smile, not quite catching what Kyuhyun said but it didn't really matter anyways.
“One of these days, Hyukkie, we'll lure in some nice gold fishes with our bait.”
Eunhyuk crossed his arms over his chest. “You make us seem like some petty girls looking for a nice, rich man to marry.” They continued throwing jokes and retorts at each other as they gathered their things and headed towards the exit. Yesung looked over his shoulders at Kyuhyun one last time, meeting eyes with said man briefly, flashing a smile and gruff nod before leaving the library.
Kyuhyun turned to the animated figures on his screen, provocatively tapping on the keys of the keyboard with muffled hisses and silent curses as he battled his way through duels, challenges and pursued certain quests. Yesung's words repeated in his mind like an addictive song: “a four letter word, but a six figure income.” He lifted his pointer finger to his lips, trying to imagine how those words slid so easily from those lips.
The visits to the library became more often over time. Kyuhyun would probably never gain approval from his mom if all he was ever going to do was sit in his room and play massively multiplayer online role-playing games, so, the library was really his only choice for escape. It wasn't unpleasant; the library was a nice and quiet place... most of the time.
One of his visits, weeks after his first, he was finally confronted by the one person who kept him partially entertained with his interesting logic at this sanctuary.
“Are you good at mathematics?”
Kyuhyun tore his eyes away from his intense gaming to look up at Yesung. “Um, yeah. Why?”
“Do you think you could help me?”
“I-” Kyuhyun paused, “You look older than me. You're probably in a higher level than I am.”
Yesung shrugged, “Maybe.”
“There's something else you want from me, isn't there?”
“Well, you know-”
Kyuhyun turned back to his gaming. “I'm not interested.”
“You didn't even let me finish.”
Kyuhyun didn't reply, nor did he stray away from his gaming.
“Okay, look. I'm interested in you.”
“Why do you think that?” Kyuhyun mumbled, more to himself than Yesung.
“I just do.”
Kyuhyun sighed and stood to his feet, facing Yesung. “I'm not a nerd. I won't be making a six figure income. I'm a geek. There's a difference.”
Yesung blinked up at Kyuhyun. “Huh?”
“Nothing,” Kyuhyun sighed. He logged out of his game and turned to leave.
Yesung caught up to him. “You know that geeks make good money, too, right? According to the Urban Dictionary, they're: the people you pick on in high school and wind up working for as an adult.” Kyuhyun lifted a brow at him. “Anyways, that's not the point. The point is I'm interested in you.”
“This is the first time we've talked, isn't it?” Kyuhyun asked.
Yesung thought to himself for a moment. “No, you coughed some words at me a while back.”
“That doesn't count.” Kyuhyun rolled his eyes. He felt Yesung latch onto his arm. “What are you doing?”
“It's cold,” Yesung shrugged, “I'm trying to keep warm.”
Kyuhyun eyed him suspiciously. “Why do I get the feeling you're familiar?”
“A common face, maybe?”
“Far from one,” Kyuhyun shivered. He rubbed his hands together. “Wait. Aren't you.... you're... I think I... no, never-mind. I don't know.” Kyuhyun grunted and shook his head.
Yesung chuckled. “It's okay, it doesn't matter.” He reached up and ruffled Kyuhyun's hair.
“Aren't you being a little too friendly?” Kyuhyun asked.
“No, you just think I am.”
Ever since this encounter, Kyuhyun and Yesung would meet up at the library more often than before. Their conversations were simple, Kyuhyun found his way to be snarky with the older man but Yesung didn't mind it. Time passed by quickly, almost too quickly, and they soon become close friends.
“You know, I told you from the start that I was interested in you. I didn't mean friendship wise.”
Kyuhyun smirked at Yesung. “And?”
Yesung pouted. “Was just saying.”
“Oh,” Kyuhyun said blatantly. He packed his belongings and headed for the door. Yesung followed closely behind him. “It's still so cold out,” He sighed, turning around and walking backwards as he faced Yesung. Yesung nodded. “Hurry up, you're so slow.”
Yesung narrowed his eyes at Kyuhyun. “You just walk too fast.”
“You just have short legs.”
Yesung raised his fist as if he was going to punch Kyuhyun but Kyuhyun caught his fist and held it in his hand. “Come on, let's go.”
A smile crept it's way to Yesung's face, tugging his lips into a silly grin. “It's cold, but it's the warmest winter I've had so far.”
“That's illogical,” Kyuhyun retorted, “Reports say it's the coldest winter in years.”
Yesung puffed his cheeks in annoyance. “How do you know?”
“I'm a geek, I know everything.”
