Hockey Wives: Season 1, Episode 2

Mar 31, 2015 19:57

Content note: this episode included a discussion about a modeling career, with all the beauty standards and weight talk that implies, and I've repeated some of those comments in this post. You can skip the two paragraphs about Martine if you want to skip that part and only read the rest of the entry.

I'm glad you're posting about this show - it crossed my radar months ago, but I don't have cable and so haven't been able to watch. but I'm enjoying your recaps a lot

I'm glad you're enjoying my reviews! I've been enjoying engaging in some feminist critique of pop culture again.

(I, uh, don't have cable either, and it's not actually airing in the US. If you really want to watch it, it's out there.)

She starts out saying of Jonathan, "He's always helping me with the baby." When it's your child, you don't help; you parent.

Ooof. Yes.

I found this whole segment to be a horrifying look at the modeling industry, but neither Martine nor the framing of the show seemed to see it as anything other than normal.

I agree that this was horrifying, but I actually thought that the show did sort of frame the exchange -- particularly the awkward silence after she admitted to having stretch marks -- in a way that made it seem it was recognizing the absurdity. I'd have to rewatch to be sure though; could just be my own reaction.

I agree with you that the women's interactions feel too staged. I guess it's tough when the cast is married to guys on different teams. I'd like to check out that Habs show at some point!

Hmm, I didn't read that pause as that kind of editorializing, but I can see that possibility. That was definitely an awkward silence, though.

You can watch the Habs show for free if you sign up for Club 1909. (This does require name, email, address, phone - and the terms say you can only change the name on your account if you legally change your name. I thought that was a fair exchange for access to their show.) There are also less official ways to access it.
