Nov 27, 2016 12:16

Hi, folks! If you're just joining us, we're on DAY THREE of six days of discussion before Small Gifts begins posting. Start off by introducing yourself (and meeting fellow participants and watchers) over here! (We also tried to start a discussion about Fantastic Beasts yesterday over here, but I'm not sure anyone's seen it yet!)

Today's question: ( Read more... )

Lately, my friends would say that I'm barely there! :) I have heard that long descriptions of kisses are a bit of a tell for me in an anonymous fest. Romance and soppy-ness are usually there as well. I like write descriptions of beautiful places and deep friendships. I also like writing melancholy, but hopeful. I am definitely a sucker for happy endings. There is enough horrible stuff out there -- I am here for the love. As a reader, I love good plots and banter and well-drawn characters. In art, I appreciate when the emotions come through on the page. I appreciate the effort people put into their work around here and enjoy the comraderie as much as I enjoy the fannishness.

I also associate you with really hot oral sex -- rimming, cunnilingus, etc. :)

And an understanding of Scotland! Those little details are like your calling card--not the main event, but an announcement that Min is here, and her magic is just getting started. :) M.

Trope-wise, I'm a sucker for shifting POVs, reverse chronology, and feminist takes on canon.

I get depressed by non-magical AU stories where the characters are distorted beyond recognition in order to fit a completely different universe (e.g. as rock musicians or baristas), but then again it's easy for me to avoid those fics and I'm sure other people enjoy them.

Oh god, me too. I do occasionally enjoy a coffee house AU, but only if there's recognizable characterization.

Most people I know don't know I write fanfiction; those who do know, know me as a Doctor Who fanfiction writer who is heavy on the angst.  And they'd be right; I've written well over a hundred pieces of Who-fic, a total (so far) of three R/S-based fics, and I love angst.

As a reader, tropes/themes I am fondest of in this fandom are post-moon care (particularly when it is Sirius taking care of Remus), Remus discovering his friends' work to become Animagi, and Sirius' mental state post-Azkaban (and, by extension, Remus taking care of Sirius in Grimmauld Place).  And, as others have said, I like the character-driven smut.  Character-driven anything, really, as there is little Remus/Sirius-oriented fic I won't read.

When I write fic, for any fandom, I like to examine a character's motivations for doing things.  In the past, I've been told I'm good at going into a character's head and writing about what I find there; my own history of mental health issues may or may not have a bearing on why that fascinates me.

Over a hundred DW fics! I'm so impressed. And intrigued. Are there elements of DW that overlap with R/S, or is it something else that draws you to them?

Character work is the thing that ties all of us together, isn't it? So many other preferences or habits, but good stories almost always have a strong understanding of character and motivation. M.

It turns out that I very much have a 'type' where my shipping preferences are concerned; I've a huge thing for star-crossed lovers.  My current OTPs are Remus/Sirius (obviously) and Caspian/Edmund (from the Chronicles of Narnia), and in both of those pairings lovers are torn (and kept) apart by things beyond their control.

My DW ship was Doctor/Rose, which got horribly Jossed by the PTB, but again it's the same story of two people who love each other but are kept apart by Fate.

I think Caspian/Edmund mirrors it more closely than Remus/Sirius (and Caspian/Edmund ends for ever on a beach, much like Doctor/Rose), but Remus/Sirius were the first 'ship where I knew what an OTP was, and they're my OTP of OTPs (if that even makes sense).

Hm... Well, lately I've seemed rather absent due to rl events affecting my ability to write for a while. I'm getting back into the swing of things, though. When I do find the time to read, I always leave detailed comments.

I mostly enjoy reading short smut, but occasionally enjoy longer stories that build up the UST, with a smut pay off at the end ;) Sometimes, though, you just need a bit of fluff/flangst/angst/dark fic/dub-con! I'm all about variety, really!

My stories are always slash and my friends usually find them quite easy to identify in an anonymous fest. It's usually due to a combination of a rare pairing, high rating and long list of warnings! I like to be different, whether it's going where others don't or exploring something familiar in a different way. I like to write non-penetrative sex, unexpected pairings (or familiar pairings with unexpected dynamics) and insert realistic elements not often seen in fanfic.

Hurrah for folks who leave comments!

I love that variety is your hallmark. It sounds illogical...and yet it also makes perfect sense. M.
