I don't think that Maggie Gyllenhaal would have done a better job as Rachel in BATMAN BEGINS. If there is one thing I had noticed about the performances of both Holmes and Gyllenhaal was that in terms of quality, their performances as Rachel Dawes seemed pretty much equal to me. As for that "whiny" voice, both actresses seemed to have similar voices to me.
However, I think that Holmes was more fortunate in that she was allowed to portray Rachel as more than just a object of desire. And I feel that she had better chemistry with Bale than Gyllenhaal, who had better chemistry with Aaron Eckhart.
Holmes didn't have better chemistry with anyone. She didn't really seem to react much to things around her.
Gyllenhall had better chemistry with Aaron Eckhart because she was supposed to. She's supposed to be shunning Christian Bale's character because she doesn't want to get hurt. She's genuinely moving on and if she conveys her affection for Aaron Eckhart's character well, that's bonus points for her.
But when Bruce wanted to leave the opera early, they left the theater through the goddamn back door. No wonder that thug, Joe Chill, was able to accost them so easily.
You may be surprised to learn this, but leaving a theatre through the back door doesn't normally lead to instant muggings. Plenty of people go to the theatre via public transport and it's not stupid of them to not expect to be mugged, even when exiting via the back door. After all, otherwise actors and stage hands would be under constant threat, wouldn't they?
I also found it unnecessary and annoyingIt's to ensure that people don't know who he really is. If he spoke

Sorry, but I don't buy this argument. Gyllenhaal's Rachel wasn't really shunning Bruce until a few scenes before her death. I just don't think she had much chemistry with Bale . . . period. And I think that Holmes had better chemistry with Bale.

I guess we weren't watching the same movie. Because I do recall Holmes' Rachel reacting a great deal to things around her.
