I adored the Poirot Series in the earlier installments, because David Suchet was just perfect for the role. But I've been having my issues with later installments, because, as you noted, the screenwriters are taking more and more creative liberties. Their version of "Murder on the Orient Express" was absolutely appalling to me.

I thought "Mystery of The Blue Train" was incoherent when I watched it, but I hadn't read the book. Does it make more sense if you've read the book and are familiar with the characters?

A little. But, I was not that impressed by how Christie handled the last few chapters of the 1928 novel.

Although I do adore the POIROT SERIES and David Suchet's portrayal of the detective, I never thought he was the "ultimate" actor for the role. I guess I still don't.
