"Wives and Daughters" is actually one of my favorite costume dramas. You gave a great review, but I do have some disagreements.

I have watched this many times, and I have read the book. This miniseries actually follows the book pretty well, but you have to read the book to get the character's thoughts and feelings. The book also gives you insight the background of these characters.

Also Roger and Molly's romance at the end was a bit rushed, but it was also the same way in the book. I also disagree that Roger fell in love with Molly just because she glammed up. Later on he tells her that she seemed to take the time to write to him more than Cynthia. He also knew that Molly was genuinely interested in his work. Plus, he always trusted her. So I think they would have a good marriage.

The problem with the miniseries is that screenwriter Andrew Davies failed to convey Roger's comments about Molly taking the time to communicate with him. And Davies failed to make Roger a more interesting character or his romance with Molly interesting . . . at least for me.

The miniseries spent less than 30 minutes in portraying Molly and Roger's eventual romance. Less than 30 minutes from a production that lasted 301 minutes. I find that very disappointing. And honestly? They made a rather boring couple.
