I actually prefer Hellboy II to any of the Marvel superhero movies and possibly even to all of the Dark Knight Trilogy too. The first one is only really good if you see the director's cut, but Hellboy II is an absolute masterpiece.
It has the slightly overblown third act climax just like any superhero movie (though better than most), but apart from that the only real complaint I can see is that it is pretty much a fantasy movie with Hellboy crowbarred in. But it just so happens to be a fantasy movie which I absolutely loved and I cannot help but be enchanted by this film. The internal conflict when Hellboy has to destroy the elemental was a particularly moving moment.
And yes, the bit with the electoplasmic locker doors. So good!
