I liked it fine, but I wasn't expecting much from it either. Also loved most of the supporting cast, and was bored by Mia Waska-whatever, can't spell this time of night.

No miracle at all. Disney just did what every big studio does these days - promotes the crap out of it before the opening weekend so everyone feels that they need to see it, before word of mouth gets out about the quality.
It's why I refuse to see most blockbuster movies on their opening weekend - if it's shit, I don't want to have contributed (in a minor way fiscally, but in a major way in personal integrity) to the successful box office. Current example: I really want to see IRON MAN 2, but I will resist for a few days. (I try to mention this often, to try and get others to join me in my crusade - alas, the lure of going to see a movie that's been hyped to death is too much for most).

i have been anticipating the movie for a long while, but when i actually went to the movie and watched it i felt extremely disappointed. to me it seemed like burton put all his effort into making the movie quirky and as bizarre as possible while neglecting a good plot. i found myself bored with the storyline while visual effects and strange creatures were dumped at me. i personally found johnny depp a little disappointing, although that might be linked to the incredibly awkward dancing scene. helena bonham carter, though, really did a great job and was my favourite character in the movie.
i can only hope that burton will try and find his way back to make a better storyline next time rather than just trying to be visually pleasing.
thanks for the great review.
