1) What didn't you like about the tv series of "State Of Play". (You state that you feel both are flawed, but you don't really discuss flaws much here.)
2) I'm not aware of any sociopaths in the movie, unless you count Ben Affleck's character. The hitman is simply doing a job he has been paid for and that is no more sociopathic than the job of a soldier in the army. Why do you think the hitman was a sociopath?
3) In the case of the tv series, it is pretty clearly a downbeat ending. The film follows a very similar plot, yet in the case of the movie I couldn't tell whether it was an upbeat or downbeat ending. What did you reckon? Was the movie upbeat or downbeat at the end?
I liked the TV version of "State of Play" as much as I liked this movie version. Both are first rate, yet both have their flaws. Which is probably why I do not rate one over the other.
To me, the ending of both are somewhat mixed - neither downbeat or uplifting.
