My theories:

1) The trailer relied too much on the names. It gave only short attention to the actual story and a little too little of the special effects too. The audience spent more time reading than watching.

2) The title and its hype made this seem like another Snakes on a Plane, a tongue-in-cheek concept or joke film for 14 year olds. And like I've said about Jon Favreau before, he's great at embracing concepts made for 13-14 year olds and adding story and character to it.

3) Scott Pilgrim vs the World had this same phenomenon: the biggest fanbase this movie is directed for, downloads.

It's a pity that the audience paid too much attention to the trailer. I can think of a lot of movies with ineffectual trailers that I ended up enjoying very much.

Oh well. I guess I shouldn't care whether it was a hit or not. I personally enjoyed it and look forward to the DVD release.

I never got that impression while watching the trailers.

I also really enjoyed the movie. I just saw it today, a month after its release, and the theater was packed. I wonder if people were just waiting to hear if it was good or not. So many big movies came out around the same time it's likely that the audience who would have normally been filling the theater were off watching Harry Potter or one of the other big summer movies.
Personally, I went because I thought it was going to be a joke the first time I saw the trailers and couldn't resist. I was pleasantly surprised by how serious it was and how well it was done. All the parts I thought were going to be silly turned out to work really well.
