I've discovered a service at lulu.com that is self publishing but it is potentially free for me. Books are printed as they are ordered. I can pay to get an ISBN number and to be listed on Amazon and Barnes & Noble if choose

if you want to be a serious writer, then i don't think self publishing is ever the way. it can work out, but you have to promote really hard and hope pepople take you seriously. people have negative feelings towards self publishing because it's a lazy mans way of doing it and doesn't have any proffessional ness to it.
does lulu edit? cos at least if they edit the books, that's something. but a publisher, small or big, are at least a vetting process of some sort. it shows that someone is willing to take a chance and put your forward. lulu doesn't have that.
i'd try small print places first. that's also free, you may make less cash but it has a more reliable profeesional edge to it.
and im going to add, at least with having a publisher who uses lulu, you have the benefit of editing and a reputable name backing you. to self publish through lulu gets the same product, but without the support, which i think makes a difference
