Summary: In her head, she’d been having this affair for years; but it was nothing like the real thing.
Disclaimer: Any resemblance of real life persons or events is purely a coincidence, because this is fiction.

Early the next day Meryl got a call from Lily. She was at home, doing the dishes after one of the quickest breakfasts in history. It was hard to keep her daughter and her husband in the same room for longer than two seconds lately, before they both bounded off to their various tasks of the day - school and dance class, or a gallery project and the sculpture design board. She’d certainly helped create a family of busy bees. Meryl was just drying a plate with a white cotton towel when the phone rang. She placed the dried plate in the rack and turned to pick up the phone on the other counter.

“Hello?” Sweet angel-voice.

“I’m taking you on a date tonight.” Lily’s low, sultry voice came across the line, with a hint of irony built into it.

Meryl could never tell whether or not to trust the things Lily said, so she made a noncommittal sound, “Hmm?”

“We are going to Nobu at 8,” She responded, obviously already prepared for Meryl’s routine.

Meryl stopped what she was doing, looked up, and started listening. Just when Meryl thought she knew how to deal with Lily, she’d go and do things like this - surprise her. It was exactly what Meryl wanted, but would never admit. She liked that Lily made decisions and took control, and didn’t tell her until it was her moment to act.

“We can’t go on a date, Lily. You know that.”

“Sure we can. All we have to do is smile for a few cameras and say we’re promoting the movie.”

She was right, Meryl thought. No one would ever notice.

“Okay, but no kissing in the streets.” Meryl smiled at the thought.

“I might let you hold my hand,” Lily smirked, “If you’re lucky.”

Their plan worked perfectly. Meryl told her husband she was having dinner with her new girlfriend, Lily Tomlin, and he agreed to pick Louisa up from dance class that evening. He didn’t even notice that she wore a brand new outfit and spent almost two hours doing her makeup before she left.

Lily arrived in her limo with her driver at exactly the time they had arranged, and they were whisked off to the hottest, hippest restaurant and celeb-hang out, for the moment, in New York.

“Well don’t you look ravishing,” Lily whispered in her ear as they stepped out of the car at the entrance to the restaurant.

Meryl briefly touched the top of her hand. “Wait till you see what I have under this dress,” Meryl said quietly and turned to enter Nobu, smiling at the doorman and thanking him. She said hello to the hostess and explained that she had a reservation for two. Meanwhile, Lily was staring after her, slow to catch up to reality. Her mind was still on Meryl’s sweetly seductive words, and her hand could still feel the way Meryl’s silver and turquoise ring pressed firmly into her own ring-finger. When the hostess led her to their table, Lily followed Meryl’s graceful essence towards the booth where they would spend the night telling stories, laughing, thoroughly enjoying each other’s company, and eating great sushi.

Lily was right. On their way out, they smiled for a few cameras and answered a few reporters’ questions. Meryl wondered what the headlines would look like tomorrow.

And then they slinked off to their waiting chauffer. No one even noticed that they left together.

That night, Lily held Meryl’s hand for hours, listening to her talk about each of the momentous joys in her life. She described all of her children’s plans and aspirations in detail and with a delightful gleam of accomplishment in her eyes. She talked about her favorite roles and working with some of the more amazing talent in the business. She went on about the community atmosphere behind the scenes at the theater and how she always found herself longing for that feeling on movie sets. Lily could listen to her speak for hours, but it was beyond the beautiful tone of her voice; she loved the enthusiasm Meryl brought to every story, and she especially enjoyed when Meryl would jump up, mid-story, and insist on imitating a certain scene of her life, playing the role of each character involved, in turn. Lily was thrilled. She made her laugh, and she made her feel.

As they sat on her red crushed-velvet sofa and Meryl entertained her, Lily’s fingers brushed gently across Meryl’s hand and she found herself staring at that giant turquoise ring and her long, graceful fingers every so often.

“Where’s Jane?” Meryl asked after a while.

“Oh,” Lily looked up at her. “Um, she’s at some writer’s conference in San Francisco.”

“Oh.” Meryl watched her for a second, trying to read her expression. She wasn’t ready to touch the cheating issue yet, mostly because she didn’t want to deal with defining what they had become lately.

“She’ll be gone till the end of next week.”

Meryl started to wonder if she was a stand-in.
