CHARACTER ADVICE anonymous September 21 2011, 07:41:56 UTC
UNNAMED CHARACTERS? anonymous September 21 2011, 08:16:04 UTC
Advice on playing a character that obviously has a name, but is never named in the source material? For anyone who's done it, have people had their characters badger the character about their name to the point where it starts getting uncomfortable trying to avoid the topic and come up with valid responses, or were people generally cool with not pushing it?

I really want to play the driver from Drive but the fact that he has no name makes me nervous.

I've never played an unnamed character before, but typically people seem to just make up a name and go with it. I doubt anyone would care too much unless an official name just happens to pop up at some point.

I once played an unnamed character and every time they introduced themselves I briefly wrote about something else, eg. "My name's--

[On the other side of the game, a squirrel ran by.]

What's yours?"

(The source material did similar cuts to something random whenever unnamed characters said their names.)

I once played the Exile from Knights of the Old Republic II, and just used the name I gave her when playing the actual game.

This probably isn't helpful. :/

I had a character who had once had a name, but due to the circumstances in the series, she had never been given one, and had just been one of The Children. I had nicknamed her "X-character's spawnchild", but overall I chose a name that seemed to fit the series and her background and made a note in the application that it wasn't explicitly said. But my series was complete; if yours isn't, I would also make a note that you could easily retcon the name if the canon name is ever found out.

And with that, good luck!

I've never played one, but early on maybe set the character up to meet someone who will give a nickname then spreads it around until everyone starts using it thus "giving" the character a name. And then things like this can happen

"Who are you?"
"I'm (blank)"
"Who?"
"... (Nickname)."
"Oh! I've heard of you! Hi, (Nickname)"

You could always put "he/she gave his/her name" in action brackets if the above methods aren't to your tastes?

Depends on if your character is the type to deflect or something. Like, 'I didn't catch your name." "That's because I didn't throw it." Or something similar.

Otherwise leave an ooc note somewhere to let people you're interacting with know, or something.

We've got The Nameless Guy from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly/The Money Series, and well, the player actually has an entry specifically for listing the nicknames he accumulates. It's ridiculously badass. I think that you could have fun with it. :>

This reminds me of the predicament Kyon players had. While he had a nickname, he would sometimes have to give his real name. In that case what happened was that they basically censored it out using ******* or something of the like.

Technically Kyon gave his real name ICly, but the **** denote that it was bleeped out OOCly.

Another strategy is just do it like "Hi my name is [real name here]!" exactly like that with an explanation that his name is never given. I would also suggest following another anon's advice about nicknames, which could go a long way if you're hesitant on just giving him a headcanon name.
