Get the novel, or someone who can summarize Fate's bits in it for you. Listen to the drama CDs, especially the one which touches on her past with Precia and Lilith. I cannot stress enough how important side material is to a portrayal of early-canon Fate, because lots of her backstory is revealed outside animated canon and it's clear that it affects her strongly, tying in with her motivations and mindset.
