Particularly how to reconcile his psychotic / offensive side with his more recent character development. I also want a better sense of how other people see him / think he should be played.

And I must be rude and stupid for not putting this in my first post, but thanks in advance. Any help would be welcome.

Creating a long-term, realistic backstory anonymous October 9 2009, 17:01:38 UTC
I have an AU!muse that won't leave me alone, and while the broad strokes of who she is and why are clear enough, I have difficulty coming up with memories and specific formative incidents. I was wondering how anon gets from "one small difference that changed the course of canon" to "a fleshed out person who credibly lived (is living?) a different life". I can't be the only person who would like advice on doing this right.

I can't help much more than saying to use logic, anon. You want to keep the character close enough to their original selves that they're still IC, but still make it credible enough. For the most important events you'll just have to think of the best real-life equivalent to it. They accidentally helped start a war and they suffered lots of guilt? Maybe in the 'real version' they just accidentally helped start a large scale fight/gang problems/bullying/etc. A bit of a lame example, but the best I could think of.

You just have to think it through for the important things, and remember that some less important ones are going to be left on the sidelines. Logic and realism!

Best advice I can give is that, anime canon or manga, he isn't going to tell ANYONE more than the most teasing bits of solid information without getting payment out of them. But, don't be afraid to have him strike up conversations with others and making comments, passing or otherwise. He might not give away solid information, but he'll still chat about philosophy or psychology or other things like that.

... and I really can't tell you much else, sadly. I play the guy and he's still a mystery to me.

One thing to keep in mind when playing this character is that the anime and manga canons are vastly different. I'd take into account the rest of the prospective cast before I app him somewhere, just because it's very difficult to play with an Undertaker from anime canon when your character is strictly manga canon. ♥

I'm trying to work out the intricacies of playing a character who generally acts like a) a nice person and b) an entirely rational one, without actually being either. Plz to assist.
